  1. The Spy Who Loved Me
Not many Bond films can lay claim to "saving the franchise" but The Spy Who Loved Me certainly can. Perfectly balanced & epic in scale, it proved that Bond could survive beyond the written work of Fleming. Some claim it to be no more than a remake of You Only Live Twice but it is a far more self-assured film than that, with irresistible allure and tremendous set design.
  1. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Fortunately the masses have come around on this one; without a doubt one of the best Bond films, and the one with the biggest heart. Beautifully shot and edited, with great use of locations & great performances from Diana Rigg & Telly Savalas especially. Shame we never got George Lazenby for at least one more film.
  1. GoldenEye
Defined Bond for an entire generation who grew up in the '90s & launched a phenomenon (with the help of Nintendo 64). But overall a pulse-pounding action film and a terrific debut for Pierce Brosnan & director Martin Campbell.
  1. Casino Royale
Like From Russia With Love, a great adaptation of Fleming & perhaps the closest thing to an objectively "perfect" Bond film. Set an extremely high standard for the Daniel Craig era, which sadly none of his other films have measured up to (yet).
  1. Goldfinger
Still considered by some to be the most iconic film in the franchise & it certainly set the standard for the Bond movie formula. Still a tremendously entertaining film that never gets old, with remarkable set design and a great score.
  1. From Russia With Love
If Hitchcock had ever directed Bond it would probably look something like this. Not just an excellent Bond film but a cracking spy caper altogether.
  1. Live And Let Die
Though the race dynamic here is problematic to say the least, Live And Let Die is a gorgeous & genuinely funny follow-up to the dismal Diamonds Are Forever that proved once and for all that Bond could be redefined for the 1970s.
  1. Dr. No
The one that started it all. Though it lacks one or two of the trademarks we've come to know from the film series, it is easy to see why Dr. No has stood the test of time.
  1. For Your Eyes Only
The most "serious" of the Roger Moore films also boasts some of the best action sequences in the franchise. Nicely combines the "Risico" and "For Your Eyes Only" short stories into an adventure fit for Fleming.
  1. Octopussy
Perhaps the most underrated of all the Bond movies. A wonderful action/adventure with great stunts & setpieces. Strikes a perfect balance between comedy & genuine thrills.
Honorable Mention: Moonraker
For whatever outrageousness you may perceive, you can't deny that Moonraker is a spectacular piece of filmmaking. Takes the Bond film franchise into a whole new territory of spectacle.

Mafia IV story idea

Note: The particularly important details and music artist names are in bold text. Licensed music track names are in italics.
The year is 1973, five years after the events of the Mafia III, and 22 years since Vito Scaletta’s seen or heard from his old friend Joe Barbaro. The canon ending of Mafia III with this Mafia IV story is Vito taking over the city after Lincoln skipped town, however Cassandra and Burke are left alive and loyal to both Vito and Lincoln still. Burke was able to survive his liver cancer by getting a black market liver transplant in Mexico, like he did in his ending, except with Vito running the city. On Vito and Lincoln’s behalf, Burke and Cassandra agree to stay behind in New Bordeaux and keep the city locked down, incase Leo Galante and the Commission try anything.
The beginning cutscene is Vito answering his telephone after getting up in the morning in his new penthouse, on the top floor of the New Bordeaux casino he finished that was once Sal Marcano's, and grabbing a cup of coffee. It's Alma with some urgent news. Lincoln Clay came down to the cigar warehouse to visit her after 5 years of silence, and he has big news.
Joe is alive in Empire Bay and has been this entire time. However, as punishment for his actions, he's become Leo Galante's personal driver against his will and is forbidden from contacting Vito ever again, or else him and Vito will be killed. Alma then tells Vito to meet Lincoln at the airport to learn more, as he's already there awaiting Vito's arrival. When they're away from anyone who could listen in on their conversation, Lincoln tells Vito he has a friend named John Donovan he's going to introduce him to, hiding in the outskirts of Empire Bay, ready to help Vito and Lincoln with their new mission
Vito gets dressed in one of his signature trench coats with a suit and tie, ready to rain down hell on the Vinci crime family and their allies, and finally be reunited with his lifelong friend he previously thought was dead, Joe Barbaro.
Here is my idea for the kill list, all related to the Commission in Empire Bay and their allies.
I'm thinking Vito and Joe work with Lincoln Clay and John Donovan to split up Empire Bay and distribute territory to three other factions not unlike what Lincoln did with New Bordeaux. This time though, this is a much larger city in a much, much different part of the United States. The empire building mechanics would be a lot smoother, more robust, and streamlined compared to Mafia III. They would work similarly a more modernized version of how the game Scarface: The World Is Yours handled it's empire building and management mechanics, minus the whole switching to other characters lower on the ladder to do your bidding. This would be ideal for a story rich organized crime game in my opinion. Here are my ideas for those factions, all close allies of the up and coming Scaletta crime family.
The Cuban mob led by Alma Diaz. Vito goes way back with Alma, and she does not hesitate to answer him and Lincoln's calls to save Joe's life and royally fuck both Leo Galante and the Vinci family.
Conti crime family, led by Enzo Conti. This Conti crime family formed sometime in late 1968, months after Lincoln helped Enzo flee New Bordeaux and drop off of Sal Marcano's radar. It turns out he fled north to Empire Bay and finally formed his own family, having more than enough years of experience in the underworld to handle the job. Lincoln's tight with him and manages to recruit him to Vito and Joe's cause.
The Yakuza, based out of Empire Bay's Japantown. Longtime sworn enemies of the Empire Bay Triads, with bad blood going back decades. They would greatly enjoy seeing Mr. Chu and his son's heads mounted on pikes, along with whacking everyone who's ever supported their organization. You don't know them well, and they're known to be very unpredictable and ruthless. Use these traits to your advantage when taking on the Commission of Empire Bay and their friends.
I should mention as expected, this entire 1973 section where you play as Vito is much shorter than Mafia III. Vito's takeover is shown much more quickly over time than Lincoln's, and there's time skips during it, to keep it short and sweet, and to show onscreen only what's important. There is also no option for your underbosses to betray you, as to reduce confusion and keep the story consistently the same each playthrough, like the first two Mafia games.
However, unlike Mafia III, after all of these tasks are completed and every single assassination target on Vito’s kill list is dealt with, the game does not end. In fact, it's not even anywhere near close to being over yet. Vito's 1973 section was merely the beginning act. It was really a lead up to an entirely new Mafia story, centering around a newcomer to the American mob. Fast forward two years following Vito’s rampage that led to him taking over Empire Bay and the Commission, in the year 1975 him and Joe now rule Empire Bay, with Vito as the Don of the Scaletta Crime Family, and Joe working as his loyal underboss. You play the rest of the game as a young up and coming soldato named Louis in his 20’s, who’s a rising star in Vito’s organization. Do right by Mr. Scaletta and Mr. Barbaro, understand kid?
My basic idea for the character and his backstory is that he's a young Italian-Canadian mobster from Toronto, Ontario, or whatever Mafia's equivalent of it could be called. Let's call him Louis DeAngelo. (No relation to Tommy Angelo) His family hails from Tuscany in Italy and moved to Toronto, Ontario in 1939, shortly after World War II broke out in Europe. Louis DeAngelo was born in July 1952 in Toronto, and was raised in Toronto's Little Italy. Louis fled south to Empire Bay when the feds started cracking down on his old family and put his boss in prison, and he ended up finding a new home with the Scaletta crime family. The first few missions playing as Louis DeAngelo involve shooting your away out of an arrest by a Toronto Police Service SWAT team in Toronto in December 1974, seeing the rest of the members of your old crime family either get arrested or shot in front of you as you make your escape. You spend the next two missions fleeing Ontario through Quebec and upstate New York, before finally arriving in Empire Bay in early 1975, late January to be exact. Winter is in full force with snow everywhere, Louis' arrival to Empire Bay for the first time in his life mirroring Vito's return to Empire Bay in 1945 30 years earlier, except under far different much more dire circumstances. Louis' older brother and his father, both capos in his old crime family in Toronto, are shown to be arrested by the TPS SWAT team in his first mission, the same one that attempted to gun him down when he resisted arrested. Louis knows someone had to have ratted out his old crime family, and he wants to find out who someday. The thing is though, he doesn't just want to kill them. He wants to get out of them why they did it before he kills them. More than anything else, he just wants to find out why his crime family was betrayed and served up to the feds on a silver platter, having most of his biological family sent to prison in the process. He’s out to uncover the mystery of why his family fell apart, and he’s more than willing to help people like Don Vito Scaletta and his underboss Joe Barbaro to eventually get the answers he seeks. I came up with the idea for this character because I figured that playing as a fugitive from the law made sense for the mob life, and I'm surprised we haven't had a fugitive protagonist in the Mafia series yet.
In the 1975 chapters while playing as Louis, the Watergate scandal, President Richard Nixon’s resignation, and the official end to the Vietnam War are both discussed on the in-game radio during news segments. In the last 1979 chapter, the beginning of the Soviet-Afghan War is also the subject of a news segment on the radio.
The story eventually transitions into the 1980's as years pass, with the scenery, cars, and music changing accordingly, and historical events of the time discussed in the game. By the time the game ends, it's 1992, and significant historical events from the past few years at the time that are covered on the radio in-game include anything from the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Gulf War, the collapse of the Soviet Union, to the 1992 L.A. riots. The rise of the internet and home computers are briefly touched upon during news segments on the in-game radio during the early 1990's section of the story, but not greatly delved into given their relative infancy in that time period. During this entire 1975-1992 stretch of the story, Vito is no longer playable, and Don Scaletta takes a backseat in the story as a main supporting character, similar to Don Salieri throughout Mafia: Definitive Edition. You now play as the Italian-Canadian Scaletta family soldato Louis DeAngelo, who is later promoted to being a capo in 1985. However, unlike Don Salieri, Don Scaletta has much more integrity, and has more genuine loyalty for his men and his associates. If you've beaten Mafia 1 or Mafia: Definitive Edition, you'll know this is something Salieri lacked in the end.
The game will include a number of hit music from the 70’s that played on the radio back then, such as Bobby Womack’s Across 110th Street and Tony Christie’s (Is This the Way to) Amarillo, The Grateful Dead's Casey Jones and at least a few songs by the then new American rock band Cheap Trick, as well as popular songs from the 1960’s people still listened to at the time, such as Sam the Sham and the PharaohsWooly Bully, King Crimson’s 21st Century Schizoid Man, Zager and Evans' In the Year 2525, The Zombies' Time of the Season, and Nancy Sinatra’s These Boots Are Made for Walkin'. When you progress through the game, especially after you switch to playing as Louis DeAngelo for the rest of the story, years change, and the music changes. Different songs start playing on the radio, such as Sylvester's You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real), Randy Crawford's Street Life, and The Village People's Y.M.C.A., Cheryl Lynn's Got to Be Real, Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive, and the Bee Gees' Stayin' Alive start playing in the 1979 portion of the game. After you've completed the 1975 section of the game, Foghat's Slow Ride starts playing on the radio. Starting in the 1977 section of the game, Cheap Trick's I Want You to Want Me and Heart's Barracuda start playing on the radio. In the 1980's portion of the game, Thomas Dolby's songs Hyperactive! and She Blinded Me with Science, in addition to Night Ranger's Sister Christian also start playing on the radio. If Hangar 13 can afford the licenses, I also think a few Michael Jackson and Madonna songs should definitely be on the radio during the 1980's portion of the story, given the immense popularity and regular radio airtime those two had in that decade. If this ended up being possible, I imagine that Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal, Beat It, Bad, and Billie Jean being on the radio in the 80's sections would be a must, Smooth Criminal especially because of how well it suits the series. Madonna's Lucky Star, Burning Up, Like a Virgin, and Borderline would also be perfect for the 80's portion of the game to me. Also mentioned by NPCs and civilians in the game are topical events of the time period, such as the release of the groundbreaking 1973 horror film The Exorcist at the end of Vito's playable portion of the game.

Note that not every single year and moment of the 17 year 1975-1992 section playing as Louis DeAngelo is playable or chronicled. My idea is it would be handled similarly to how the time skips in Mafia 1/Mafia: Definitive Edition were handled. Time skips of two or more years, or in this case, even longer such as 4 years sometimes, the game skipping from 1979 to 1983. This is to keep the game and story length ideal, and not risk it getting boring or repetitive, or going on for too long. Repetition was a big problem in Mafia III even if I still thought it was a superb game, so I think it'd be best to learn from that for the next big entry. The games story will skip ahead and show onscreen only what's significant, similar to the first Mafia game and it's remake, as well as certain aspects of Mafia II. Louis starts his section as a 22 year old fugitive soldato who got picked up by another crew south of the Canadian border, and in the epilogue of the game in 1992, is promoted to the consigliere of the Scaletta crime family at the age of 40, being set to take over the family once Vito and Joe become too old to run the day to day on a regular basis.

Much more of the rural areas and countryside outside of Empire Bay are included than what was available in Mafia II. The way rural environments are handled for this hypothetical Mafia IV is akin to how Mafia: Definitive Edition and Mafia III handled their rural environments outside the main cities, except much larger in scale, given the increased power of the current new consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X. This region is based off of upstate New York and the surrounding areas across multiple states in the Northeastern US, and includes forests, fields, mountains, rivers, lakes, beaches, and small towns. Also included are other cities and towns, based off of other large cities in New York like Syracuse, Buffalo, and Rochester, where other story missions, business activities, and side missions take place, along with smaller notable places like Ithaca, Binghamton, and Utica. The entire states of New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Delaware, Maryland, and Ohio are also included, including places based off of all of their major cities and most of their notable towns in between. Large portions of Pennsylvania are included as well, including Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Scranton. Large portions of the eastern half of the Canadian province of Ontario are included as well, including cities based off of Toronto, Ottawa, and Niagara Falls. There's even a small portion of Quebec included, including Montreal and the surrounding countryside of the province outside that city, including a few small towns in southern Quebec. The player must pass a quick border patrol check when crossing the US-Canada border in a car or other ground vehicle.
Wildlife is present in the game, mostly to add to the background, scenery, and immersion in rural environments on the map. These are all animals native to the Northeastern US, ranging from white tailed deer, coyotes, bobcats, Canada lynxes, rabbits, hares, groundhogs, gophers, beavers, raccoons, opossums, bats, chipmunks, red and gray squirrels, mice, and rats to more formidable and potentially dangerous animals that may sometimes attack the player, such as grey wolves, black bears, mountain lions, and moose. These last four animals are known to spawn in the mountainous regions, especially in New York, Ohio, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Ontario, including the rural regions based off of the Catskills and the Adirondack mountains. Dogs are present in the cities, towns, and settlements where humans live and keep them as pets, being walked and sometimes found in people's yards. Some are used as guard dogs by enemies and are aggressive towards the player on sight. Domestic cats are also present in the background of residential areas, and both Louis and Vito own them as pets throughout the game in their safe houses, as well as other onscreen characters we see the homes of throughout the game.
Aircraft make their first usable appearance in the Mafia series too, from airplanes to helicopters. Vito cannot use planes or helicopters in his playable 1973 portion of the game, as he does not know how to pilot, being a paratrooper in World War II who never actually flew any of the planes himself. Aircraft are unlocked to use when Louis DeAngelo gets his pilot’s certificate offscreen in 1977, and at the end of a chapter set that year, Louis has to fly Vito in a helicopter to a penthouse in Downtown Empire Bay acting as a family safe house, equipped with a helipad. Louis frequently serves as a personal driver and pilot for both Vito and Joe afterwards, having done a lot in his time serving the family to earn their trust and respect.
Melee weapons also make a return from Mafia: Definitive Edition, with even more variety this time. In their respective sections of the game, Vito and Louis may use anything from baseball bats, pipes, shovels, brass knuckles, golf clubs, police batons, switchblades, kitchen knives, bowie knives, ice picks, 2x4s, claw hammers, crowbars, tire irons, chain links, machetes, meat cleavers, pickaxes, hatchets, sledgehammers, to fire axes. This amount of melee weapons is so no matter what environment the player finds themselves in during a mission or any other game activity, there is usually a weapon of some sort nearby. If the player has obtained piano wire, you may also strangle an enemy to death with it from behind as a stealth kill, this being a classic assassination method infamous for being used by the Italian Mafia. Rope can also be found and used for similar strangulation stealth kills, appearing in the gameplay environments where piano wire can’t be found. There is a wide variety of new guns and explosives to use in this concept for Mafia IV, going with the new weapons of the time the game takes place that criminals quickly got their hands on. This includes the SPAS-12 combat shotgun, the Beretta 92 pistol, the AK-74 assault rifle, the mini uzi, the MAC-10 submachine gun, both suppressed and unsuppressed variants, the Beretta 92 pistol, the Taurus raging bull revolver, Glock handguns, the TEC-9 machine pistol, illegally modified to be full auto, the Ruger Mini-14 full auto variant, and even Vietnam war era flamethrowers, which I think is only natural given that as of Mafia III, we already have RPGs and grenade launchers. Late in the game from the 1989 section and onwards, the Benelli M3 combat shotgun becomes available. The Milkor MGL grenade launcher becomes available beginning in the 1983 portion of the game. Attached grenade launchers are also available for the AK-47, AK-74, and M16 assault rifles.
Free ride makes a return in Mafia IV, with the player having the options to change the weather, time period, and an option to play as Louis, Vito, Joe, or Lincoln. Naturally, a multitude of new free ride missions are available as well.

I wanna play too! (My top 10)

I'm gonna go with reverse reveal (al a David Letterman)
Brief context. Without fail almost every year for about the last 10 years I have watched every Bond movie but not always in release order, just in the order of how I feel like watching. Now that I have completed my 2020 rewatch, I saw other top tens, I decided to play too!
  1. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
I never know how to feel some years with this movie. I do think it's incredibly important and I do think it's got a weird structure to the narrative that I think messes with the flow. While I enjoy the meta humor at the beginning, I do think it's a bit heavy-handed and unnecessary but it does sneak in as my number 10. It kind of jostles with The living daylights and Spectre for that ten spot
  1. Moonraker
While I agree that the spy who loved me is a ton of fun, I still come back to Moonraker as a more enjoyable film. It doesn't take too many lulls in the action and it has a far more interesting villain than its predecessor while still maintaining Jaws as a carryover. I love the set pieces and the rationale of killing humanity is, both a scary thought, and a sort of Thanos like mission.
  1. License to Kill
First and foremost, I am a big Timothy Dalton fanboy. I think he was a severely underrated. I think between his two outings, I prefer this movie. Very rarely would you see the main character take those sort of hits and punches and cuts and scrapes but in Dalton's time Bond was his most dark and real. And those are the qualities I think I appreciate in comparison to the more campy feel of Roger Moore.
  1. Tomorrow Never Dies
While I think Pierce Brosnan maybe had two films that were good, I think those good films were exceptionally good. And this film still speaks to the issues of today because of how great and scary a villain like Jonathan Carver is in the now reality of fake news. This was so ahead of its time and I think my appreciation for it only grows with every passing year that I watch it.
  1. Casino Royale (2006)
So if it wasn't already obvious that my enjoyment of Dalton has led to my very real enjoyment of Craig. Call it a reboot if you want or not I just still enjoy it. Love the opening sequence, love the opening track, love the banter with Vesper and how that plays out through the film. And then re-watching it with that knowledge almost makes these small choices in the film more interesting. I noticed more details that were really clever when I would rewatch this.
  1. Thunderball
I'm just going to get this out of the way before you work your way down to the end. I do not like From Russia with Love. I think it's boring. That movie puts me to sleep every time I watch it. But Thunderball I enjoy it so much. I love that it continues the Spectre lore. I love the locations, the vibrancy of the scene. Yes, sure, you can easily make an argument that the climactic fight scenes at the end are bit meh and I'll concede that but I think I just enjoyed so much of this film that it makes up for it. I think I just enjoyed a movie where Bond was actually trying to be a detective.
  1. Live and Let Die
This may be a random addition to some but something about Live and Let Die just sticks with me. I so badly wanted that villain to succeed because I thought it was really clever and unique at how they set up his plot. The henchman are so much more interesting than most other villains we get in this franchise. And yes I can totally agree that there are questions regarding the black-splotation that this is being inspired out of but given what existed in bond up to that point I enjoyed at least having that injection of diversity, not just in plot, but also in cast. It also moves away from the spectre stuff to talking about drug cartels and diplomatic manipulations was really different and refreshing.
  1. Goldfinger
I mean, what is there to say? So much of the iconography of this franchise was born out of this film. This is definitely one of the Bonds I can easily just throw on any day, at anytime, and enjoy it every time. I enjoy the plot and the villain's machinations. I love the song. The car and chase scenes are incredibly iconic and it's also one of the few films that is latent with critical acclaim and awards as well. So while many other films have come since I still stand by a Goldfinger as one of the best.
  1. Goldeneye
I know I've seen some chatter in this subreddit about the importance of The Spy Who Loved Me and I would say that this film holds just as much of that importance. If you go and read about the history of this film, everything was on the line. Great track for an opening sequence, iconic moments and scenes with some sharp lines, excellent villains and henchwomen. And sure while I wish Sean bean didn't have to die in every film, I thought he was so good in this. Then given the recent events of that satellite installation actually falling apart to this past year kind of adds a little extra sting to re-watching it.
  1. Skyfall
I do think that maybe I'm one of the few that really thinks this film checks every box and just knocked it out of the park. Aside from what felt like a throwback to the old days when you have Adele singing that opening track, that is so haunting and moving. A film where Daniel Craig's Bond seems so much more Mutlu dimensional. And then having the last of the pieces (Mallory/Moneypenny/Q) of this new universe coming together before they flip that switch and hit you in the heart at the end of this film. Let alone how good Javier Bardem is and the sort of technical prowess with which he attacked MI6 seems so authentic for our times.
And in short you may have noticed a common theme that a lot of my rankings aren't just about how I think but it is hinged a lot on the villains in these films. Bond is only as good as his adversaries and I think in this collection of 10 films these were some of his best adversaries.
So whether you agree or disagree I do appreciate you following my random brain droppings and I'm excited to read other people's top 10s beyond that. I hope you all are doing well staying safe and enjoy this coming year. I hope it is nothing but good tidings for you all and come next Thanksgiving I'll be rewatching these all again!

Putting Bond's revenge against Quantum at the centre of Quantum of Solace

Saw the post mentioning that no one has attempted to give Quantum of Solace a rewrite and decided to give it a shot. It was actually harder than I thought. Rewatching it I think many of the film’s issues comes from the director writer than writing. I think the generally plotting of the film is fairly decent, especially giving the ongoing writer’s strike at the time. The main issue is that there’s effectively two films going on: One in which Bond is hunting down Quantum seeking revenge for Vesper and one in which Bond goes rogue in order to stop the CIA financing a coup d’etat in Boliva. My main goal was to try better merge them into a more cohesive story. In particular I want to give Vesper’s former lover, Yusuf Kabira, (ie the reason she betrays Bond and then gets murdered in Casino Royale) more of a role, rather than just having him be relegated to a single scene at the end of the film.

The Changes

· Making Yusuf Kabira, Vesper’s former lover, a major character, effectively serving as the main henchman of the film
· Changing Camille’s backstory. Instead of being a Bolivian agent she’s the daughter of the current Bolivian president and she’s has also been seduced by Kabira. Quantum’s plan is to expose the relationship between the President’s daughter and a foreign agent, thus creating a political scandal that will pre-empt a coup d’état by General Medrano.
· We cut Dominic Greene and the Plot To Steal Bolivar’s Water entirely. We give most of Greene’s role to Mr White.
· Finally, we are going to play up the whole Bond Versus the CIA thing. Lets try and use Jefferey Wright more and give Felix a bit of a redemption arc

The new plot

We are going to cut the opening car chase entirely and start with Bond driving into the Sienna safehouse having captured Mr White at the end of Casino Royale. Waiting inside the safehouse are M and another agent called Yusuf Kabira. Bond can greet Kabira saying something like “How was Bolivia?” and he replies with something witty like “Very stimulating”. The interrogation goes the same way as the original as Kabira is revealed to be a double agent and helps Mr White escape. Bond chases Kabira across the rooftops of Sienna. They can briefly fight but Kabira is able to escape. Cut to the opening title sequence.
After the titles we see MI6 investigating Kabira’s London apartment. In a secret compartment they discovered files on Vesper Lynd including photos of Kabira and Vesper together. Bond is visibly shaken by this information and M asks him if Bond can be trusted to keep his feelings separate from his job. Bond assures M he will. He also suggests looking into Kabira’s recent mission in Bolivar. When they do, they discover that Kabira was having frequent meetings with a mysterious woman at a particular hotel and will soon meet her again.
Kabira meets the mysterious woman, who we learn is called Camille, in the hotel in Santa Cruz, Boliva. The two are clearly lovers. They go to their room but are ambushed by Bond waiting for them there. We then basically get the scene from the end of Quantum of Solace where Bond reveals who Kabira is to Camille and shows her the necklace he gave to Vesper, identical to one Kabira’s given to Camille. Camille is obviously shocked by this revelation. At gunpoint Bond orders the two of them into a car to drive to an airfield where MI6 is waiting to arrest Kabira. In the car Kabira taunts Bond about Vesper. The car is soon stopped by members of the Bolivian military led by a General Medrano.
Bond now finds himself being captured as he is separated from Kabira and Camille and taking to a different site. There he discovers Felix Leiter and several other CIA agents. Initially Bond is pleased to see an ally but quickly realises that Felix and the CIA are working with Medrano and Kabira. Leiter tries to justify himself saying that things are more complicated than they seem, and that MI6 has no business getting involved in Bolivia. He also reveals that Camille is the daughter of the Bolivian president. He pleads with Bond to go back to London and forget about what he has seen. Bond refuses and escapes leading to a chase between Bond and the CIA. Bond is able to make his way to the airfield where he leaves Bolivia, dejected after failing to capture Kabira and avenge Vesper.
We then see Leiter meeting with White and Medrano. This pretty much resembles the scene from the original film where the CIA strikes a non-interference deal with the pair in exchange for the USA gaining access to Bolivian oil. After Leiter leaves, Medrano tells White that he has held up his end of the bargain and accuses White of unnecessarily delays. White argues that they need the support of the other partners of “his organisation” before they can go ahead, and Medrano replies that perhaps he should speak to White’s partners in person.
MI6 discover that Medrano has booked a ticket to see an opera in Bregenz, Austria and Bond goes to investigate. We then get the scene from the original film where the leaders of Quantum have their meeting during the Opera. Medrano is also at the meeting and we hear the Quantum members give their assent to go ahead with Medrano and White’s plan to expose the relationship between Camille and Kabira (who will be presented as a British spy) thus creating a political scandal which will cause a crisis allowing Medrano to seize power. Afterwards Medrano will allow Quantum to take control of Bolivia’s oil fields. With Medrano is Camille who is clearly being held there against her will. When she excuses herself to go to the bathroom Medrano sends one of his men to watch her. Camille still attempts to escapes and Bond intervenes helping her but blowing his cover in the process and gets caught in a very public shoot out with Medrano’s men. Medrano and the other members of Quantum escape.
We then cut to London where we see M getting a dressing down from the foreign secretary in the aftermath of the shooting in Austria. The foreign secretary tells M that the Prime Minister has bowed to American pressure and order that all MI6 operations in South America be terminated. With no choice M calls Bond and orders him to return to England but Bond of course refuses. M once again asks if his desire to get revenge on Kabira for Vesper’s death is affecting his decision-making. Bond hangs up.
In a safehouse Bond and Camille watch as news of Camille’s relationship with Kabira makes international headlines and the crisis Medrano and White engineered begins to take shape. Bond and Camille open up to each other, with Bond hinting at his past with Vesper. They resolve to return to Bolivia and attempt to prevent Medrano’s coup d’état. Without MI6 aid Bond turns to Rene Mathis who, after being acquitted of being a double agent following Casino Royale, is living in retirement in the south of France. Mathis agrees to help them, and they use his private jet to fly to Bolivia.
As they reach Bolivian airspace two American fighter jets begin tailing them, ordering them to land. Bond, Mathis and Rene agree that their only option is to abandon the plane only to learn there’s only one parachute onboard. Mathis tells Bond and Camille to escape while he leads the Americans away, sacrificing himself. Bond tries to protest. Mathis tells Bond that Vesper did love him. As Bond and Camille cling to each other with the parachute they see Mathis’ plane get shot down.
Once they land, they make their way to Bolivia’s capital La Paz. Felix contacts Bond for a meeting, effectively offering a brief truce. Camille tells Bond its a trap, but Bond decides to go anyway. They meet in a bar and Bond is able to convince Felix that Medrano will betray the CIA and give Quantum access to the Bolivan oil fields. Felix tells Bond that they are currently being watched by other CIA agents and as soon as Bond leaves, they will try to kill him. Felix gives Bond a location to go to if he survives. Evading the American agents Bond goes to this location and discovers Felix has left him a file detailing the CIA’s involvement in the impending coup d’état.
We then see tanks rolling into La Paz as the Medrano’s coup d’état begins. Medrano arrives at the state television station to announce his takeover. Bond and Camille race to the station to try to stop him. Fighting their way through Medrano’s men they are confronted by Kabira. Bond and Kabira get locked in a one-on-one shootout as Camille goes to take on Medrano alone. She finds the studio where Medrano is broadcasting the announcement of his new rule. His men have all left to stop Bond leaving Medrano all alone. Camille shoots Medrano and starts showing the Felix’s evidence of the CIA’s involvement.
Mr White, watching this unfold, orders the broadcast be stopped by any means necessary. The tanks outside the television station suddenly begin firing on the building, reducing it to rubble.
We cut back to Bond and Kabira who are now fighting hand-to-hand. As the building starts to collapse Kabira becomes trapped under falling debris. In desperation he reaches out to Bond. Bond holds out his hand, only to drop Vesper’s necklace in front of him. He leaves Kabira to die. Finding Camille, the two escape the collapsing television station.
They go to the Bolivian Presidential Palace as the Bolivian military either retreats or surrenders around them. There Camille’s family is waiting. The two kiss before parting ways.
Cut to a few weeks later Bond meets Leiter on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Leiter tells Bond that Mr White and the other members of Quantum have all gone underground and can’t be found. Bond asks Leiter if he’s been reprimanded for the whole Bolivian affair and Leiter replies he’s being sent on a dead-end assignment to San Monique. The two part as friends. As Felix leaves Bond receives a call from M about his next mission.

[Let's build] d100 events caused by magical manifestations/creatures/beings that happen in a Modern City.

Hey everyone! I'm trying to put together a game where my players will be apart of an organization that protects the human world (or really just the city they'll be playing in) from otherworldly/magical/etc. threats. The city seems to be a focal point for strange occurrences, magical creatures and beings, portals, etc. If anyone remembers Special Unit 2 from the early 00's, it's like that. (Man I loved that show.) And this is the map I'm using, just changing the name but the layout and places of interest are mostly staying the same.

If you want to check out SU2 I'm pretty sure there are some episodes on YouTube. Its heavy on the cheese and it'll be really dated by today's standards but it was a good time.
  1. A connection to the Feywild has happened in one of the city parks. An elf finds his way through and finds it entertaining to enlarge small animals.
  2. Thieves have stolen an artifact from the history museum, reanimating a mummy in one of the exhibits.
  3. An unusual amount of sharks have been seen near the docks. Boats are being attacked by Sahuagin raiders.
  4. A surge of chaotic magic bursts and causes the creation of multiple Mephits. (Depending on location)
  5. An edgy teen visits a graveyard to perform a necromantic ritual. He doesnt know that the "spell book" he has actually contains an incantation that raises several undead and is now in over his head.
  6. A dead body found, torn apart, all signs point to someone summoning a low level demon and using it as the murder weapon.
  7. Somebody figured out how to brew love potions and now they are selling them on the streets.
  8. A portal to the elemental plane of water opened in the city's water supply. Now wild water elementals are pouring out of showers, sinks, and fountains.
  9. A skyscraper acquires an elemental spirit. The movements start off so subtle that they could be mistaken for the wind, but they become stranger and stronger with each passing day.
  10. Zoo animals begin take on dire traits and break out their enclosures.
  11. Goodberries become an invasive plant through runners, never flower, never fruit, just keep branching out.
  12. Turns out the royal family were lizardfolk.
  13. An a little person (Halfling arcane trickster) is hitting up all the casinos.
  14. A cleric poses as the second coming of christ, oh he also caused covid 19.
  15. An artificer constructing his own personal army of modrons.
  16. Strange events in a swimming pool, several people have died by drowning (Water Weirds).
  17. Rust monster moves into a construction site, eats and rusts the supports and the workers equipment.
  18. The Native American Thunderbird is finally spotted, its a Roc.
  19. Boogey man sighted by many families. An Oni is skulking between houses, looking for something or someone.
  20. Monsters take up residence in an abandoned circus. Medusa in the house of mirrors. Rakshasa tending to tigers. An ogre in the strongman tent. A hag in the psychics caravan.
  21. Kraken spotted near the mariana trench.
  22. Running of the bull - a famous giant bull statue is turned into a gorgon and roams the streets.
  23. A wizard has become a modern day frankenstein, constructing a flesh golem.
  24. The gargoyles of a famous landmark come to life at night.
  25. Duergar have been building tunnels in the underground and taking the tracks to increase their metal stores.
  26. A dryad protects a park after witnessing too many people littering in its home.
  27. A young shadow dragon takes offense at all the lights at night, ruining it's stealth and plans.
  28. Barlgura takes a woman hostage and climbs to the top of a skyscraper.
  29. A Bulette is reaking havoc on a nearby junction. The cars are disturbing its young.
  30. Some jackass decided to magically enlarge a chicken so he can have bigger drumsticks. The spell worked, in fact it worked too well. The chicken's the size of an allosaurus and is rampaging down town!
  31. The low income tenement housing is a blaze and the fire departments are having a terrible time putting out the flames ... largely due to the presence of an accidentally summoned fire elemental. Thankfully the elemental will return to the Plane of Fire in an hour when the spell ends.
  32. A real live dinosaur walks through the screen at a viewing of Jurassic Park.
  33. A few real zombies turn up in the middle of a walking dead (costume party / filming / LARP).
  34. A group of adventurers walk through a portal. They end up attacking a group of larpers.
  35. Dinosaur skeleton at a museum animates.
  36. Men are disappearing around the (canals, docks, river, etc). Mermaids are luring them into the water.
  37. Giant rats in someone's basement.
  38. Terracotta soldiers at a museum animate.
  39. Statues around the city have begun animating seemingly at random.
  40. A group of pixies has developed a fascination with cars and keep stealing parts from them.
  41. 3 people have gone missing on the 39th floor of the Enigma Enterprises office on 11th street. The building is only 35 stories tall.
  42. The public library’s chief librarian just won her 1,402nd consecutive Employee of the Month award.
  43. A local graffiti artist has starting to use a new tag that incorporates a design they saw in a museum exhibit on ancient writings. These tags begin acting as portals to... elsewhere.
  44. A grafitti artist who has been illegaly spraying his art work around the city has suddenly started incorperating dangerous runes into his art that have several anomulous effects (like low gravity in an area or being part of a summoning ritual).
  45. An amusement park has to shut down the log flume and other water rides due to an infestation of water weirds.
  46. A subway tunnel collapses and traps a subway train after a portal opens and releases a Purple Worm into the tunnel, weakening the ceiling. Luckily another portal opened up soon thereafter and the purple worm was transported back to whichever fantasy world it came from.
  47. A user posted the true name of a powerful demon on an old forum, and cultists are trying to steal the forum's retired servers from a warehouse before the data is overwritten.
  48. A local shut in has accidentally started and broken a contract with a brownie
  49. A blink dog is making a habit of stealing dog toys from dogs at the park
  50. A water elemental gets stuck in the sewers due to the amount of human garbage
  51. A gnome alchemist has been dosing coffee pots in cafes around the city with various potions for entertainment
  52. An elven druid has convinced the local pigeon populace to fight back against corruption in office, targeting a mayoral candidate. the druid is working for another mayoral candidate who is forcing her to work for him by holding her pet familiar hostage
  53. An artificer who came to our world has discovered firearms and has developed the world's first eldritch cannon, as such he is now being hunted by human military agencies that want his prototype
  54. Beans from a bag of beans have somehow been mixed into a shipment of green beans to a grocery store
  55. An annual dwarfism awareness event is populated almost entirely by halflings who entered the modern world illegally
  56. A magical disease that causes those afflicted with it to dance even without music until they eventually collapse from exhaustion
  57. Telepathic conversations are being picked up by cellphone calls, the snippets of audio are indicative of a plan to assassinate city's head of communications
  58. An assistant at the local morgue has been found beaten to death, and several bodies are missing. There are spots of clay all over the morgue, and all the missing bodies are of women between the ages of 18-30. A lonely and insane wizard has created a clay golem and is now using it to find the parts he needs to make a flesh golem bride from himself.
  59. There's been a series of mysterious deaths in the local red light district. Several Johns, and even a few Janes, have been found dead with no obvious cause, the only links between them is that they were all found in a state of undress, and they all had a look of horror on their faces. One of the prostitutes is actually a succubus in disguise, and she has been sucking the souls or her clients.
  60. There's been talk about a changeling in the city who, for a price, will take the form of whoever you request and frame them for various crimes.
  61. The rivalry between the goblin gang, The Sons of Gobbo, and the kobold gang, Tucker's Kobolds, is threatening to escalate to the point of gang warfare. Either peace is to be made between the two gangs, or a crackdown on one or both gangs is required.
  62. A mated pair of wyverns are staking out the local park for a nesting ground. We've got to run off those wyverns before they settle down or else we'll have to call in the national guard... again.
  63. Some poor fool bought what he thought was a monkey's paw, only for it to turn out to be the Hand of Vecna. We need to get it from him before he decides to do something stupid, like actually use it!

  83. If you were in NYC or Kentucky, a dragon has sniffed out the Federal Gold Reserves and is trying to make it his lair.
  84. When you’re in the metro system, which is naturally full of graffiti, one of the graffiti symbols lights up. It’s a rune that’s about to explode.
  85. The newspaper reports that every single McDonald's in the area has a working ice cream machine. It's deemed a miracle by many in the city. The newspaper credits it to hard-working corporate engineers who have perfected the cleaning and disinfection process. You, however, know the real reason. With some investigation, it turns out that the $1 $2 $3 dollar menu has a perfect storm spell coded into the registers. The codes for specific items, when entered in a specific sequence in a customer's order, are actually a conjuration spell that summons a Mimic, and, as we all know, Mimics have a fondness for soft serve.
  86. Lightning/Electric elementals have found junction boxes to be tasty snacks causing blackouts around the city. Remove them so the engineers can fix the grid.
  87. A minotaur has found the "Bull in a China shop" analogy to be racist and is now sitting in said shop and refuses to leave. The owner is distraught, and hesitant to say anything due to the red interior and the possibility of a fight breaking out. Remove the minotaur without causing any damage.
  88. Pixies have found photo bombing models to be the new prank for anyone that wants to be popular. Here's a net, catch them and give them an alternative to photo bombing.
  89. Vampires have been found in front of many Old Town homes, we believe that they are trying to either buy the home or enjoy the look of the neighborhood. In any case, the home owners want you to be there for protection while talking to the vampires.
  90. There are cultists holding rallies in the park. I need you to separate out the ones that can do harm and the ones that are less likely to be harmful. Also they need permits to do that so every one of them gets a ticket.
  91. Some wizard decided s/he was going to set up residence in the middle of the road. S/he said something about ley lines or some such being good there. Stop them from doing so and show them around town so they can find an alternative spot, they'll be a strong ally so work with them please.
  92. Ratmen have been found in the subway system. In order for the population to not explode, I need you to organize them to some degree. Find a representative that can speak for them and bring them here so we can talk.

My Bond Ranking

  1. Casino Royale- Origin story that didn’t feel like one. Craig plays Bond just like the book. He’s jacked. Him and Vespers chemistry. Bond felt like a real spy/assassin. He could be hurt emotionally and physically. Locations. Action. Entire cast. His wardrobe. Most realistic torture scene in a movie imo. Poker. Bond becoming cold hearted after Vesper dies and unattached (seen in later films). That iconic ending with the 3 piece suit and the classic intro and theme for the first time.
  2. Goldfinger- Set the formula for what would follow. Goldfinger himself. Best pre title sequence to date. Rolex 6538. Golf scene. Aston Martin. Pussy.
  3. Goldeneye- pre title sequence. Brosnan. Bean. 007 vs 006. Omega Seamaster looking cool and being used as a gadget. Natalia. Action packed up the wazoo.
  4. Skyfall- Delving into Bonds past. Silva. Theme song. Shows Bonds mental and physical struggles. Battle at Skyfall. Judy Dench.
  5. FRWL- Robert Shaw. Train Fight. Entire main cast.
  6. Dr. No- First scene with Bond. Locations. You’ve have your 6 scene. glimpses of real spy work like hair on the door.
  7. Thunderball- Domino. The Bahamas. Connery still got it.
  8. Spy who loved me- Overall classic bond. Stunts. XXX. Locations. Gadgets.
  9. Golden Gun- Christopher Lee.
  10. Spectre- Modern take on Spectre. Blofeld great. Believable retcon of all of Craig movies.
  11. Tomorrow never dies- Great action and gadgets.
  12. World is not enough- Brosnan awesome, good plot twist.
  13. You only live twice- Volcano Lair and finally meet Dr. Evil ;)
  14. Moonraker- Hugo Drax great villain.
  15. Quantum of Solace- Good action, Craig excellent.
  16. Live and Let Die - Voodoo threw me out of it. Paul McCartney song still slays.
  17. License to Kill- Also Dark and Humorless
  18. Living Daylights- Dark and Humorless
  19. OHMSS- Visually stunning. Lazenby doesn’t do it for me. Great ending
  20. Diamonds are forever- Connery phoned it in. Cheesy. 21.Die another Day- Brosnan does his best with what he’s given.

Underrated Bond films

Over the years, I have discussed what Bond fans consider the best and worst 007 films ever made. First of all, there is almost universal agreement on the early Connery films, Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me, The Living Daylights, Goldeneye, Casino Royale and Skyfall being great and rightly so. On Her Majesty's Secret Service rightly has been considered great nowadays by most too.
After that, things get weird. Licence to Kill is considered great by many but as an action film akin to Lethal Weapon or Die Hard more than as a Bond film. Fair enough but what happens next is amazing. Casino Royale 1967 is not only the worst Bond film ever made but also one of the worst films ever made. Yet, some Bond fans put it above Quantum of Solace, Diamonds are Forever, Octopussy, Tomorrow Never Dies and Moonraker, all to me great Bond films. A View To a Kill then splits people who love Zorin in it but think Roger Moore is 'too old'. Yet many also rank the odious 1967 Casino Royale above it.
I do not see the hatred for some Bond films. All films I mention here (bar Casino Royale 1967) I love. I know other Bond films have their flaws (the finale and car chase in The Man With The Golden Gun are way below par, the climax in SPECTRE was well a bit of an anti-climax, etc.) but they are still great films with great moments.
Casino Royale 1967 on the other hand has nothing to offer only a weird 'pop culture of the time' feel. It works neither as a Bond film or a Bond film spoof. It has a great cast but utterly wastes it. Orson Welles could have been the greatest Bond villain ever if this was made properly.
I have watched CR1967 4 times to try and understand/like it but it is what it is. Another problem with it is it is not set on location much. It seems they only went on location in Scotland for the castle scenes. The rest is in a studio and full of dated and weird over the top 1960s cliches. This is the only Bond film I hate.

The World is Not Enough: An Underrated Masterpiece

The World is Not Enough is the most underrated film in the Bond series. T.W.I.N.E is truly one of the best Bond films, and even of the best action films ever made. Almost every elements of the film is perfect, it's like so hard to find flaws. This is easily a top 5 Bond film, if not higher. There are many Bond films worse than this that receive much higher praise, and this disturbs me.
GOOD
-Brosnon - his best film, obviously, and his best performance. She slowly defined and evolved his portrayal over the prior 2 films, and in TWINE, shows more emotional and vulnerable side of Bond than we've never seen before. Also includes some of the best one liners ever put to film, and Sir B's of them delivery is flawless. "I never miss", also "Bond, James Bond" is said in the middle of an action sequence! Truly innovative!
Supporting cast - Dench, Desmond, Cleese, Coltrane, Seru. I mean, fuck me!
-Villians:
Eleckra King - the first and only time a female has been the main villian. Amazing
Rerand - brilliant villian, he cannot feel pain which is a crazy concept, only fault is he's slightly underused. Also the villians plan is original and not remotely similar to any previous plotline, but later was by copied by skyfall (gag).
-Action/Setpieces // god tier
Pre title sequence - literally the best pre title sequence of the entire franchise - this is undebatable, it's literally a fact. It's a 2 in 1, you get the spain scene with the window jump at the very start, and then the extended boat chase, filled with never ending stunts and action, in such an iconic location. WOWzers!
-Plot - simple and easy to follow, but not dumb or boring like spectre.
-Locations - simply put, the best locations ever put to screen in a Bond film. The river thames in London, eastern Europe, spain, Scotland, the fRench Alps, the skiing sequence - omg breathtaking.
-Cinematography - once again, god tier, every frame and shot looks delicious
-Gadgets
Q's boat, avalanche bubble, underwear glasses, watch grapple hook, remote control car etc etc wow...
-Score/Theme Song
David Arnold's best score, along with Casino Royale
TWINE by garbage is the best theme song in the franchise. Shirley Basey? Adele? Duran duran? You no name my? None even come close to TWINE by garbage, a masterpiece of a song.

Highways and dead ends

The hunt for Xavier Ligonnès is enough to drive you crazy. It’s like looking for a lost object, a bank card for example, of which we can determine the exact moment of disappearance: we used it to pay, it was there, and the next moment it is not there anymore. Logic dictates that we look for it where we usually store it (a wallet, a handbag), then where it could be (a back pocket of pants, a hall cabinet), and the less we find it , the more we seem to see it everywhere. Faced with absence, the brain constructs images (the credit card in an office drawer, as a bookmark in a book, forgotten on the counter of the last store) but these are fictions or mirages; they encourage further research but they do not provide a solution. Xavier Ligonnès’s apparent volatilization follows the same logic and produces the same effects on the investigation. The more weeks and months go by, the more places to look get smaller. Emmanuel Teneur ends up leading the investigators to the Société Générale agency on Place Royale in Nantes, but the safe he holds there is simply empty. A request for information on Joven Soliman is sent to the security attaché for the French Embassy in the Philippines. He is a sedevacantist priest, a fringe of traditionalist Catholicism who considers the Pope to be an imposter. The attaché transmits the hours of mass where he officiates. A trip to the Philippines is being considered, but that would mean going to the other side of the world to look for a needle in the thousands of islands of the archipelago. If this track has never been closed, nothing has supported it to date.
Since we must push logic to the end, the investigators even contact the American authorities to corroborate or contradict the story of protected witnesses told by Ligonnès in his famous letter. The DEA has never heard of the individual, and the liaison officer based at the Miami consulate assures us that his last trip to the United States was in 2003: Ligonnès arrived in Florida on July 18 and left on August 22. The study of his entourage also did not highlight anyone capable of providing false papers to the fugitive, and if he had gone through a criminal network, the police believed that an informant would undoubtedly have warned them to protect himself.
Then there are the news reports: the portrait of Ligonnès goes around France, and even if he has undoubtedly changed his physical appearance, his hairstyle, perhaps had even resorted to cosmetic surgery, someone, somewhere, might recognize him one day. After all, that’s how John List, a New Jersey insurance salesman who killed his wife and mother in 1971, was arrested. He waited for two of his children to return from school to coldly shoot them, then attended his youngest son’s football game before shooting bullets through him at home. He evaded justice for 18 years until a co-worker recognized him from a report on America’s Most Wanted.
Rarely has a criminal case given rise to as many appeals as that of Ligonnès, because his stalking not only bewitches the police, it torments an entire country. More than 1000 reports, thousands of pages of depositions, letters, verifications. You have to imagine the miles of printed paper that this represents when they are stacked on a desk. The most recent: in July, after the broadcast of a Netflix documentary on the subject in the United States, the producers of the film claimed to have received an interesting lead in Chicago; but it’s just one more drop in the bucket. Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès has been seen in Annecy, Nancy, Cholet, Corsica (several times); on the side of a road, thumbs up, by a French tourist in Las Vegas; disguised as a chimney sweep in Nîmes; in a hotel in Cantal and in a pizzeria where he paid cash in a hurry; seen again in Germany, in Italy, and heard on the telephone by the reception of the psychiatric hospital of Troyes. Since he disappeared looking like the ordinary neighbor, since he was a representative and his profession has taken him to all corners of France, there is no less reason to see him in Mulhouse than in Roche-sur-Yon, and you can simply see him everywhere.

Extracts: “It was the same look, except that he looked very sad, in the west, but he had the same glasses as in the photo you are showing me”; “He looked like a man like everyone else, but there was something odd in his eyes;” “Yesterday, around 1:00 pm, I was watching the news on television on the TFI channel. I saw a report where an individual killed his children and his wife before disappearing into the wild. (...) Seeing the gentleman in the photo, I made the connection with the person whom I had crossed Sunday afternoon because he had the same smile.” At the Vauvert tourist office: “I hardly look at the news, but Thursday evening I saw the photo of Mr. Ligonnès, I had the impression of having already seen him, my heart was racing.” Between Carpentras and Avignon, when he comes back from the bakery, the manager of one of Nicolas Sarkozy’s brothers crosses paths with a man with a beige bob, which he is certain is the fugitive. “I flashed,” he says. “For me, there is no doubt. This is him.” Still more letters are sent to the police to offer them help. An amateur astrologer requests a copy of the suspect’s birth certificate to establish a birth chart, a woman in child-like writing recommended a great medium who had helped her find her daughter who had become a junkie in Marseille. A prisoner asked in writing to be sent to Guinea to go hunt him down in the jungle, attaching to his letter a list of the necessary equipment, including infrared glasses and a “samurai sword.”
With each letter, with each phone call to report a suspicious individual, investigators attempt to cross-reference the information. They patiently collect the testimonies of the depositors to know where Xavier Ligonnès was seen, if he was accompanied or not, what was his size and his outfit. Inconsistent testimonies or those referring to individuals who are too young (Ligonnès would be 59 years old today) and too small (he measures a little over 1.80 meters) are discarded. For the others, investigators check the CCTV recordings, when they have not been erased and when the cameras have actually recorded on tape. If the person has been spotted pumping gasoline, in a Géant Casino, or in a Courtepaille, they trace the means of payment used and seize the duplicates of bank cards. They give priority to the restaurants, especially the Buffalo Grill, Ligonnès’ favorite establishment. And when the trail is still hot and the dishes haven’t been done yet, they collect DNA from the plates and cutlery. A few months after the start of the investigation, the investigating judge in charge of the case will even be forced to ask them to slow down, the seals starting to take on the appearance of a china cabinet in a large restaurant.

The PJ of Nantes believed on several occasions to finally have in hand the winning ticket and to be on the point of intercepting Ligonnès. This was the case in Borgo, where a photo taken from the video surveillance of a supermarket in this small Corsican town was very similar. Upon verification, it was only a local. They believed in it even more in January 2018 when they were told that an individual with a strong resemblance to Xavier Ligonnès was at the Saint-Désert Notre-Dame de Pitié monastery near Roquebrune-sur-Argens. About twenty police officers raided and searched the premises until they came across Brother Jean-Marie Joseph, who certainly looked disturbingly like Ligonnès, but who was not him. In still other cases, the police were never able to “close the track,” and it is perhaps Ligonnès who was seen.
For example, in Lançon-Provence, April 26, 2011. That day, at 2:44 am, Mahjoub B., a handler by profession, parks his vehicle at the Total service station after the Lançon-Provence toll. He fills up, then goes to the store to pay. On his way, he passes a 45- to 50-year-old man, about six feet tall, who hangs out there between the gas pumps and the store. When he returns to his vehicle, his colleague asks him if he has seen the man, whom he is convinced is the one everyone is looking for, the one who killed his family in Nantes. Mahjoub then takes a new look at the individual, notices that he is wearing glasses, light jeans, that he has brown hair a little graying and a beard of a day. At his feet, four rigid shopping bags, one red, one white, one brown and one whose color he cannot distinguish. Inside the store, employees also noticed the individual. He’s been out for almost three hours. At one point, he walks in to ask for free coffee, as part of a promotion. Behind her cash register, Jocelyne H. notes a detail: he is missing a tooth. “The second on the left, I believe,” she says when heard by investigators. This is information that has never filtered out and yet, it’s true – a little detail, Xavier Ligonnès was missing a tooth. Little by little, the space has filled in, but you can always see it when he smiles. The images from the station’s surveillance cameras are confusing: if this man is not the one we are looking for, it must be his twin brother. At 3 a.m., the cameras show him hitchhiking by a Volkswagen Combi, which investigators quickly find. The driver’s name is Christophe B. He has not heard of the case, and he must be one of the only ones in the country; but Christophe is no longer listening to the news because, he says, “the news is bad all the time.” From the hitchhiker on the night of the 25th to the 26th, he remembers that he “did not smell very good” and that he had a growing beard. They didn’t discuss much. The man simply told him that he was coming from Paris where he had gone to see “his sick old father,” and that he wanted to take the train to Aix-en-Provence. Christophe dropped him off at a motorway exit, the 30 or the 31, between 4 a.m. and 4.15 a.m. The surveillance cameras at Aix train station allow you to get back on track. He is filmed on the forecourt at 6 am, he wears light pants, a dark jacket. He buys a ticket at 1.20 euro, free destination. Then we lose track.
Despite all the checks, despite all the cameras, it will be impossible to track this man perfectly resembling Dupont de Ligonnès, who could nevertheless have confirmed that he was, at least on this date, still alive.
How can one suddenly evaporate in plain sight, and how could a man who has collected chess all his life accomplish this feat? The XDDL mystery makes it possible to scaffold all the theories. These flourish in books, in docudramas and, of course, on the Internet. We imagine Ligonnès protected by the secrecy of a monastery, flown to the United States, where he can go unnoticed thanks to his English without an accent, or even on the escape alongside a woman he would have manipulated. The police officers in charge of the case do not work on theories or psychological profiles, but according to a scientific approach: they always start from a fact, which opens a track, which they then explore until the end, close, and move on to another. This method is also a way to protect yourself from endless guesswork, or insanity, but it doesn’t always work. Several times, the track looks like a highway towards the fugitive, and the police are convinced that they will finally close this investigation. But they end up stumbling upon the worst thing ever, as was the case with the allusion to Emmanuel Teneur’s sailboat: coincidences.
Coincidence number 1. When the Ligonnès C5 was discovered in the Formula 1 car park in Roquebrune, the night watchman informed them that two reservations had been made in the name of Dupont Xavier, one on April 5 and the another on April 14. The hotel manager then specifies that the first reservation was actually made for April 6. That day, however, XDDL was in Nantes, probably digging the grave of Thomas, murdered the day before. Had he thought of accomplishing his crimes earlier or had he reserved a room for an accomplice, who might have been hiding something for him? The videos of April 5 and 6 are no longer available, but payment for the room was made with a Crédit Agricole credit card. The number gives a name, Faiçal E., and an address. Could it be an accomplice? The checks are launched immediately lead to a man who simply used “Dupont Xavier” as an assumed name - like Ligonnès - to book a night in the same hotel, the same year, the same month, within ten days.
Coincidence number 2. The liaison officer in Miami launches research around the various aliases used by XDDL, for operations of “mystery shopper” or to stay in hotels. In the FBI file, he finds a certain Xavier Laurent, one of Ligonnès’s favorite nicknames, installed in Jacksonville, north of Florida. Jacksonville is not just any city. This is where Hugues, the cousin of XDDL lived, and it is also this locality that Ligonnès and his friend Michel Rétif declared to customs in 1990 during their trip to the United States. At the very end of the personalized letter sent to Michel on April 8, Xavier Ligonnès seemed to allude to it: “I will think about you there. (Not the right to tell you where, but you went there with me...in November 90…a clue to dig. LOL).” But this Xavier Laurent is another twist of fate: the police come across a certain Evan Shaffer, a petty criminal who has chosen this alias to commit crimes.
Coincidence number 3. Ten days before the crimes, XDDL reconnects with a childhood sweetheart, Catherine K., whom he met in Versailles in the 1980s. Between March 22 and 24, they exchange text messages and try to find a date to meet the week of April 12, in Chamonix. These messages intrigue the investigators, some answers seem surprising, almost illogical, and they suspect Ligonnès of having wanted to ensure a logistical relay in his escape. A little later, a certain Patrick O. reports having seen XDDL in the queue of a Sixt car rental agency at Nice airport on April 17, 2011. By peeling the names of dozens of people having rented a car that day, the police officers miss the infarction: in capital letters, white on black, appears the surname of Catherine, who would have rented a vehicle at 1:30 am. A few hours later, their heart rate drops again: it was only a perfect disambiguation.
Each coincidence causes the same chain of reactions. First a eureka!, the certainty of having finally found the tiny detail from which to trace everything. The police then cast their nets like fishermen on the high seas, telephone or banking requisitions, requests for listings, identity checks. Then they wait. It can last from a few hours to several weeks, and inevitably it is a burning, nagging wait, tense by the fear that the track will fly away. Finally, there is the immense disappointment and the obligation to face reality again: Xavier Ligonnès is still nowhere to be found, a track has flown again, and we have to hoist the rock up the mountain again. Those who have worked or are still working on the affair strive to maintain a cold, rational, police facade. But little by little, by dint of chasing a shadow - not even a shadow, a ghost - obsession lurks. One of them, a police officer with a professional Protestant pastor, now out of the investigation, still returned until recently to consult the investigation file every week, saying he simply wanted to put the 12,000 pages of documents in order. For a year, a criminal analyst has also been mobilized. He enters all the elements of the file in a software which digests them and spits out, perhaps, new threads to draw. In the meantime, the two police officers who are still following the investigation - one at the PJ in Nantes, one at the OCRVP, in Paris - “live” the case, as their colleagues say. Among these thousands of pages there is no doubt a clue that has gone unnoticed or, better, a lead that has not yet been explored.
Track number 1. Who typed “fraternité saint-thomas becket” on Google on April 3 at 11:34 pm, before clicking on a link in the Cité-Catholique forum? Is it the same person who, the same night at 2:01 am, from an iPhone, did the search for “communion state mortal sin,” bringing it to the same forum? On April 8, the user of this phone will in any case send the search engine the request “hello Chacou”, which will lead him (her) again to the Cité-Catholique forum. Chacou was one of the pseudonyms of Xavier Ligonnès. Investigators saw crazier coincidences, but still: can it really be someone other than Xavier Ligonnès, who himself connected to Cité-Catholique almost every day of his escape? The last article published on the site about Saint-Thomas Becket, an ultra-traditionalist fraternity which practices mass in Latin, dates from January 2009. It indicates the name of its founder, Father Jean-Pierre Gac, and specifies this: “Born in the diocese of Blois where there are two communities (…), the fraternity has also extended in the diocese of Toulon - a parish is also entrusted to them in Ollioules.” Ollioules is located six kilometers from La Seyne-on-Mer, where XDDL spent its penultimate known night, and 94 kilometers from Roquebrune. Jean-Pierre Gac was questioned by the police but claimed to have never been in contact with the fugitive. Investigators have always believed in the possibility that Ligonnès took refuge in a monastery in the Var. They considered to search them one by one, before understanding that there are dozens and dozens of brotherhoods and fraternities, that they are not always castles of the Purple Rivers but sometimes simple farms, lost in the hinterland. To mount a search, it would be necessary to ensure that they do not communicate with each other, and therefore to visit them all at the same time. The examining magistrate quickly tempered the fervor of the police and declared the operation impossible.
Track number 2. Xavier Ligonnès had two secret Facebook accounts. The first is named after his favorite country singer, Waylon Jennings. One of his nieces had also found him a month before the crimes, sending him a message, “but who is behind this nickname?,” to which XDDL had immediately replied “How did you manage to arrive on the Waylon Jennings Facebook profile? Too clever! Microsoft Advantage??? Kiss.” The second account concerns a certain “George Town” residing in Nantes and is linked to one of Ligonnès’ many email addresses, [email protected]. The police send a requisition to the management of Facebook in Palo Alto to obtain the creation and connection logs of the two profiles. The answer comes in days: the first was created in February 2010, the second in December 2007, when France had barely discovered the social network. Above all, the response indicates that Ligonnès connected to the two accounts on the night of April 4 to 5, between the first assassinations and that of Thomas. The profiles have since been deleted but suggest he could have used them to communicate with a third party. Catherine K., the youthful lover that XDDL contacted a few days before the tragedy, also reported to the police that she had been approached by a certain Philippe Steiner, whom she did not know, around May 20. He sent her a strange message, suggesting that they might have had a relationship in the past. When she went to respond, the profile had already been deleted. Today there are almost 100 Facebook accounts on behalf of Waylon Jennings, some are created and deleted every day.
Track number 3. When the Ligonnès family is having their last meal on April 3, 2011, around 9 pm, a young woman walks through the glass doors of the police station on Place Waldeck-Rousseau in Nantes. Originally from a small village near Vannes, Julie is a BTS student and comes to file a complaint: the Twingo that her father lets her drive has been broken into, probably during the night. There was not much inside, but Julie reported the theft of her car radio as well as the vehicle’s logbook, which she normally stored in a small Renault gray faux leather pouch. This same pouch was found on April 22 in the dresser of the Ligonnès living room where Xavier used to store his papers, during the investigation the day after the discovery of the bodies. The police did not follow this track: they put the break-in of Julie’s car on the account of one of the Ligonnès sons, Arthur, who had already been arrested for theft of a bicycle and driving under the influence of cannabis. But why would Arthur have taken the vehicle papers with the car stereo, and why would he put them in the middle of his father’s papers? And if the theft was committed by Xavier Ligonnès a few hours before killing his family, how can this be explained? Was he able to steal other identity papers to facilitate his escape?
In this case, it is always about cars. Those imported by XDDL from the United States, the Citroën C5 from the escape, the vehicles he claimed had been stolen over the years: the first at the Brest police station in 1998, while living in Pornic, a second at the same time at the Saint-Nazaire police station, and then again, in Nantes, on May 17, 2006, a Golf convertible finally found then sold a few months later to a mechanic, a friend of Cédric M.
Cédric M. is never far away when it comes to cars. He is also a mechanic, that’s how Ligonnès met him in Vannes a few years earlier. He is one of the recipients of the departure letter, therefore a close friend. He was even the first employee of the RDC. Ligonnès regularly went to visit him in Locmalo in the heart of Morbihan, a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Nantes. With Cédric and his partner, Renaud, they went to the local creperie. They had lunch there together on March 31, 2011, four days before the crimes. In the village, it is said that Ligonnès took care of the dark accounts of the “guys,” who have quite a reputation. Could he have built up a slush fund there that no one would have found until now? Cédric and Renaud’s garage is not indicated by any sign. It is at the end of a road. In the yard, wrecks of American cars and a goat on a leash. Inside, Renaud is working on a shiny yellow Cadillac. His attitude is confusing. He is angry with the police who have never come to question him when he is, according to him, “the last to have seen [Xavier] alive. But I will not tell you when, because that the date is important,” he adds before returning to his Cadillac, wrench in hand.
To date, Renaud has still not been heard by investigators.
At the same time, reports continue to flow.

Quantum of Solace is worse than Spectre. Fight me.

So I went on a James Bond binge this weekend and watched all four Daniel Craig films. Casino Royale and Skyfall are both masterpieces. Spectre was meh, but it gave a sort of primal old-school Bond movie feel that I couldn't stop rewatching it. Quantum of Solace was absolutely horrid. Seeing it right after CR didn't exactly help it's image to say the least.
Dominic Greene is one of the most washed out villains ever seen on feature film. He literally just looks like an ordinary dude with bug eyes. Nothing frightening about him. The accent was atrocious and seemed forced. His costume was also dull, bland and had no character to it. What kind of mafia boss wears white dress shirts? There could have been so much more to "up" his villainous effect throughout the film.
Olga Kurylenko was weird in this movie too. Too cold of a demeanor and not nearly enough lines to emphasize character traits. There was something very "absent" about the portrayal, especially compared to someone like Vesper Lynd.
Daniel Craig wasn't too bad, but was lacking in attitude compared to Casino Royale. He didn't break the flim, though.
Although admittedly Spectre had a badly written villain played by Christoph Waltz, his henchman was FANTASTIC (absolute killer fight scenes in this movie as well). The locations were also far more interesting. A Lamborghini showdown in downtown Rome? A snowy chase in Austria? A hand-to-hand combat in a train in the middle of the North African desert? THAT'S what I call an action movie. Not some sinkhole revenge story and a Russian girl trying to defeat a chubby Spanish dude in an army uniform. Greene's "death" was also complete garbage. Bond just leaves him out in the desert. WTF?
Overall, Quantum of Solace was so cold and distant that you couldn't really connect with the characters. By all means, Camille Montes was a better Bond girl than Madeline Swan, but other than that, the bad guys were more pronounced in Spectre.
Spectre felt like a traditional action movie, comparable to stuff like the Transporter or Bourne series, which actually improves its standing as a Bond film. Also better humor and comedic relief by far. Quantum of Solace just seems laughable and Greene doesn't seem as dark and brooding as Blofeld. His demeanor was completely off, it felt like he had nothing to hide. Skyfall was quite a refresher after that shitshow of a movie.

An unpopular counter-opinion on Spectre

In view of the newest installation of James Bond coming to the big screen in two months, I wanted to start a discussion about it‘s latest installation: Spectre. Many comments seem to place Spectre in the lower ranks. I wanted to list some of the points that made the movie a well-rounded and worthy step in the development of Daniel Craigs portrayal of James Bond.
Spectre was in my opinion a well-written and directed movie with a unique setting and beautifully shot scenes.
It had a good and explosive start, showed a Bond that fell in love again and also showed a new Blofeld,which we didn‘t have for quite some time. It was interesting to see all the Craig movies being connected by a bigger organisation and an ultimate mastermind behind it. Overall, it exhibited a well thought through script
It had beautiful, long and uncut shots at times, the right amount of action and some comedic relief moments (Sono topolino/I am Mickey Mouse to the bouncer in Rome). The filming locations were impressive and well chosen, like the Maroccan desert, Rome or Altaussee in Austria. It had a top of the line cast for side characters, which might throw someone off, like Monica Bellucci for the Sciarra widow. Sadly she wasn‘t having enough screen time, especially for the amount of money she probably demanded.
There were some things that the consent didn‘t like and I personally have to agree to the following two points:
The reveil of Franz Oberhauser as Ernst Stavro Blofeld was lacking in drama. It was almost predictable. Also, Franz having a personal bone to pick with Bond was a turn to the worse. To think he built an international criminal empire, just to toy with Bond and finally even having a final show-down and loosing seems to be a rather poor choice of action and could be considered as a sign of weak character.
To some, the connection between the movies of Craig‘s Bond was unfulfilling or they just didn‘t like it for some other reason. Personally I figured it made sense that the previous villains had help. There were hints at a larger organisation in Casino Royale and Bond even got on the track of Spectre. The villains of Quantum of Solace were a bit weird and I never figured that movie out really. In Skyfall on the other hand it seemed obvious, that Silva could never have built his syndicate just by himself. He had and needed large scale funding, preferably from an even bigger criminal organisation.
In conclusion I would rank this film as upper mid-tier. It’s a well-rounded movie about a James Bond in the 21st century, trying to deal with demons from his past and seeking closure. There can be both positive and negative points be made, but overall I feel like the positive ones overweigh.
I would be interested if my opinion overlaps with yours or if I am absolutely off. Maybe list something I am idolising or my list is missing.

  1. Roger Moore - absolutely loved his gentleman approach to the role, yes he was goofy and funny but I still love watching him in the role. Yes he may have gone on too long and should probably have finished after at least The Spy Who Loved Me or Moonraker, but he did bring something fresh to the table when he came in especially after Connery's dismal Diamonds Are Forever performance. RIP to a legend 😇
2/3. Sean Connery/Timothy Dalton - Before, I would have without a doubt had Connery battling it out for first place. However, I've come to appreciate Dalton a lot more and fail to see why he's so underrated and disliked too much. Dalton brought the Fleming books right into the two classic films he done and he really did look like a killer. I wish Dalton did GoldenEye and Roger Moore's last three Bond films since age did noticeably affect the last three Bond films. Tough to call between the two, maybe leaning more to Connery but still a very tough choice as both are brilliant in the role.

George Lazenby - Please hear me out, at first i thought he really wasn't cut out to be Bond as I thought he was awkward in the role but as I watched OHMSS more I began to like and appreciate Lazenby far more than I did. I personally believe he would have been a fan favourite if he done more but he was poorly advised. I would have much preferred he do Diamonds Are Forever than Connery because Lazenby had just lost Tracy Bond tragically and DOF is the film after OHMSS. I do like Lazenby and personally feel he has become underrated and not thought of fondly enough.
  2. Pierce Brosnan. - (SHOCK OPINION) I can already see the resentment coming.
Had Brosnan had a great continuation from the start like Connery did then Brosnan would have for me arguably been the best Bond in the whole series. But the films just went on a huge downward spiral for me. I really did like Brosnan in GoldenEye but from there on I didn't come to appreciate Brosnan enough which is a shame because I was born in the Brosnan era. I thought he and Halle Berry were a joke in Die Another Day and I never came to love Brosnan and gain too much interest in Brosnan which I wish I could. To me he was a mix of Connery and Moore, could show the more tougher side of Connery with woman and a more light hearted and womansier version of Moore.
  1. Daniel Craig - Look, in his own right he is a great actor but when it comes to James Bond I can't really like him much. Firstly I can't come to terms with a blonde James Bond, I feel like his films have lacked a strong villain excluding Le Chiffre who I thought was fantastic in Casino Royale and maybe Raoul Silva in Skyfall. But I don't really favour Craig in the series, outside of Bond I like him for instance in Defiance. But he came at the time when Jason Bourne was really popping and many including myself are huge Jason Bourne fans.

Review of the 60s Bond films

Hi guys. I've been marathoning the Bond films. I wanted to share my thoughts and see what you all think. Everyone has different opinions on the Bond films, so discussing it would be interesting. Feel free to comment below and tell me what you agree and disagree with.
Dr. No
A film that must be appreciated for kickstarting the franchise. Connery gives a good first performance as Bond and his interpretation is immediately codified. The characters are memorable, with Quarrel and Jack Lord’s Felix Leiter being standouts. Honey Ryder doesn’t do much in the story, though her entrance is iconic. Mostly there as eye candy. Joseph Wiseman only appears as Dr. No for a couple of minutes, but he’s truly menacing in the role and is the standard for which other villains should be set against. The plot is faithful to the original novel and is more of a mystery than an actual spy thriller. There is a nice balance between humor and seriousness, with Connery managing to be witty in one scene and cold-blooded in another. The production design is decent considering the lower budget. Ken Adam’s Crab Key sets are impressive and are a testament to his visual genius. Complaints I have with this film are its pacing, which drags a bit too long for my liking, and the score, which can get a bit over the top at times. The James Bond theme is the best track of course and the lyrical songs like “Underneath the Mango Tree” are entertaining. I’m probably a bit harsh on this film even when considering that it’s the first Bond film. The pacing hindered my enjoyment of the film, which is rough around the edges, but still does things right.
From Russia With Love
This was a huge step up in quality from Dr. No. Connery’s performance is even better, with plenty of quips to lighten the film. The film manages to faithfully adapt the novel while changing what wouldn’t work on the big screen. The pacing is much better than its predecessor. The first 50 minutes introduces the characters and provides exposition on the spy world brilliantly. No other Bond film would provide this much espionage either than The Living Daylights and possibly For Your Eyes Only. The film manages to be a thriller while also introducing more action-packed moments that would become mandatory for the franchise. Daniela Bianchi is beautiful as Tania and is more plot relevant. The villains are threatening and leave a strong impression. John Barry composes his first Bond score and the difference in quality in music is obvious. Barry’s work on the franchise shows just how much music can affect one’s perception of a film, with lesser films being elevated by Barry’s awesome scores. “James Bond with Bongos” and the recurring “007” are highlights. The theme song is nice and this film marks the beginning of integrating instrumental versions of the themes throughout the score – something that hasn’t really been done extensively since 1989 with the exception of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace (No Good About Goodbye by Shirley Bassey was rejected despite David Arnold using it in his score). Overall, FRWL was a great film and definitely remains one of the best Bond films to this day.
Goldfinger
The film that introduced many elements of the Bond formula. Connery is once again great in the role, but a slight step down from FRWL. Goldfinger and Oddjob are iconic villains, though they lack menace and feel more cartoonish. Pussy Galore is probably the best Bond girl in the Connery era, thanks to Honor Blackman (RIP) providing charisma and toughness to the role. Her seduction by Bond and resulting defection was ridiculous. Jill and especially Tilly Masterson are interesting characters but barely have any screentime. The plot is good, though it lacks the espionage and mystery of earlier films. Removing some of the novel’s problems helps the script, especially with the details of Operation Grand Slam. The pacing is slower and the scenes in Goldfinger’s ranch go on for far too long. The music is good though it is a bit too reliant on Shirley Bassey’s great theme song. “Alpine Drive – Auric’s Factory” and “Dawn At Fort Knox” are my favorite tracks. The film deserves credit for launching Bondmania and helping the franchise be the behemoth it is today. However, to say that it is still the best after all these years is an overstatement considering the formula would be refined in the future.
Thunderball
An improvement over Goldfinger and the first truly “cinematic” Bond film. Features everything people have come to expect from a Bond film. The film is more visually appealing and combines the best elements of its predecessors: the exotic location of Dr. No, the espionage and pacing of From Russia With Love, and the larger scale of Goldfinger. S.P.E.C.T.R.E was already established to be a large organization, but this film truly establishes just how much of a global threat they are. Some point to this film as being responsible for the larger emphasis on gadgets, I personally feel that its successor was the culprit. Bond is forced to rely on his wits several times throughout the film, sometimes without gadgets. John Barry’s score is even better in this film, with the use of trumpets in tracks like “The Bomb” and “Search for the Vulcan” giving an otherworldly feeling befitting of the underwater focus. Speaking of which, the underwater scenes are extremely well made and while they may go on for too long for some, I personally love them for their unique atmosphere. Everything about Thunderball feels refined over its predecessors and the fact that it’s less talked about than its predecessors and lesser follow-ups is a shame considering it’s the best in the Connery era by far.
You Only Live Twice
A mild step down from its predecessor. The plot and characters are mostly unmemorable, with Tiger Tanaka being the only standout. Aki is a far more interesting Bond girl than Kissy Suzuki and killing her off was a waste. Donald Pleasence’s Blofeld is iconic, but barely appears and drops the villain ball after meeting Bond. The other villains are forgettable. The film is probably the biggest of the Connery era and definitely the largest in scale until The Spy Who Loved Me ten years later. The volcano set is the most oft-cited example of this. The Japanese setting is interesting and offers some nice locales; I kind of wish that even more of the country was shown, though this is nitpicking. John Barry outdoes himself once again with another atmospheric score that makes use of strings to evoke a Japanese feel. I enjoyed this film more Goldfinger, but it’s hard to deny that the story and characters aren’t the best, even by Bond standards. YOLT was a sign that bigger doesn’t always mean better.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
The best of the 60s Bond films. George Lazenby is the worst Bond by default because he only made one film. He lacks Connery’s charm and charisma but makes up for it by being much more believable in his fight scenes and for being more vulnerable than Connery’s masculine Bond. It’s hard to tell if Connery appearing in the film would have improved it. Considering how excessive Bond’s womanizing got with Goldfinger onwards, seeing Connery’s Bond fall in love and ready to settle down is a bit hard to imagine. Tracy is a great Bond girl and her relationship with Bond develops throughout the film. I’d even say that I prefer it to Bond and Vesper in Casino Royale. Telly Savalas plays the best Blofeld, showing more physicality and charisma in the role than Donald Pleasence. The story is much more involved than previous films, the only predecessor that matches it on the same level is FRWL. As mentioned before, Lazenby is more believable in his fight scenes. Couple this with the unique style and editing and you get some of the most thrilling action sequences the franchise has offered. The Switzerland scenes are some of the most beautiful in the franchise. Peter Hunt’s direction deserves a mention with photography even more refined than that of Terrence Young. One shot in particular that stood out was the helicopters flying to Piz Gloria during sunrise. The one complaint I really have with the film is its 2h 22m length. It’s a good film but it does go on too long in some instances. OHMSS has the best score in the franchise. There are too many great pieces to mention here. Lastly, I personally feel that OHMSS has been just as influential on the franchise as GF and TB. Like FRWL, OHMSS was more grounded while still featuring many classic Bond elements. The film’s influence can be felt in the 80s Bond films directed by John Glen, who edited this film. His first film, For Your Eyes Only, feels like a proper follow-up to OHMSS with its pre-title sequence and grounded tone compared to prior installments. This focus on realism while still keeping elements of the formula continued for the rest of the 80s. OHMSS was a great film and it’s great to see that it finally gets the recognition it deserves.

Making Spectre the You Only Live Twice of the Craig era and a better sequel to Quantum of Solace

It’s been said before that the structure of Craig era of James Bond has some parallels with the Connery films, especially in regard to the villains. In Casino Royale/ Dr No – the villain is a mid-ranking member of an otherwise unseen criminal organisation. In Quantum of Solace/ From Russia With Love (and also Thunderball to an extent) – Bond is more directly in conflict with the villainous organisation and it is understood that bad guy defeated at the end is still just a lackey to the real villain. Goldfinge Skyfall are independent of the larger plot with a hitherto unconnected villain (until Spectre tried to retcon Silva). Spectre’s equivalents therefore are You Only Live Twice and Diamonds are Forever in which Bond directly confronts and defeats the big bad villain at the top of the criminal organisation.
While this works in the Connery era since Spectre and Blofeld had been set up since Dr No, in Spectre (due to legal circumstances outside of the film’s control) Blofeld is quite poorly forced in as the big bad behind it all with no setup. The organisation of Quantum meanwhile is retconned from being a illuminati-like society of the world’s most powerful individuals manipulating the strings from behind the scenes to being one part of Blofeld’s masterplan to screw with this one kid his father taught to ski.
So my fix is this – rather than have Quantum being one section of Spectre instead have Blofeld take over Quantum over the course of the film turning it into Spectre.

The new plot

We have a similar opening to one we got with Bond (in this version Bond will be responding to an intelligence tip MI6 received) in Mexico city walking through the Dead of the Dead paraded and up to a hotel room with an masked woman. However, when they reach the hotel room, they find a very sickly Mr White holding a gun on them. Bond tells the Masked Woman to go wait outside and Mr White talks about how Quantum has changed, becoming more divided and filled with infighting since the events of QoS and that new more ruthless players are cannibalising Quantum’s old guard, with Mr White himself being poisoned after he challenged their rise to power. He tells Bond he will give him the names of Quantum’s leadership if MI6 promises to protect someone for him. Before Bond can ask him who a shot blasts through the wall killing White. Bond exits the room and spots the Masked Woman running away from the hotel carrying a gun. He pursues and we get the same chase through the parade and helicopter action scene we got in the original with Bond killing the Masked Woman at the end rather than Sciarra leading us into the title sequence.
Cut to MI6, which is still located in the London Undergound/ World War 2 bunker from Skyfall but its undergoing extensive renovations in order to expand it for full time use. We get the scene from the film of M reprimanding Bond about his actions in Mexico City. I would remove Bond being suspended because I’m quite tired for the rogue agent trope. M exposits that the Masked Women was a Russian SVR agent although Moscow is claiming she defected earlier that year. We can also meet Max Denby aka C, and get the exposition about the possible changes to MI6 although in this version rather than it being a merger between MI5 and MI6 it’s a new EU wide organisation which will merge Europe’s various intelligence communities together (Spectre came out a year before the UK’s Brexit referendum so it wouldn’t hurt to reference British-European tensions). The British Parliament will shortly be voting on whether MI6 will be joining this new European Security Service. We then get a classic Q branch scene which includes Bond being giving a piece of jewellery disguised as a tracker along with the explosive watch from the original film.
Bond goes to Austria to investigate Mr White’s last known residence. As he approaches, we cut to group of Russian-speaking men watching Bond’s progress, with a particular focus on one man I’m are going to call ‘Russian Felix Leiter’. Bond’s investigations reveal that Mr White has a daughter but before he can investigate further the Russians begin to enter the house intent on capturing Bond. A shootout ensues and Bond is able to escape leading to a car chase action sequence as Bond phones up Moneypenny to check the records about Mr White’s family.
After Bond evades the Russians he travels to the facility where Mr White’s daughter, Dr Madeline Swann, works in hiding as a psychiatrist. We get the same psychiatric evaluation scene we did in the actual film only we regularly cut to Mr Hinx’s slow approach into the facility to capture Dr Swann. As this is his introduction, we can take time to build up his character with him forcing his stone thumbnails through one of the facility’s staff member’s eyes similar to the actual film. Following this we get the same chase down the mountain slope we got in the actual film, only without Q , as Bond races to free Madeline from Mr Hinx. After some convincing she agrees to trust Bond and take him to Rome where she knows that Quantum’s leadership will be meeting and explains that she, as Mr White’s next of kin, is entitled to seat at the table.
The journey from Austria to Rome can include the train sequence from the original film where Bond and Madeline get to know each other and include the fight scene with Hinx.
They arrive in Rome and Bond gives Madeline the jewellery/tracker gadget as she is to be taken blindfolded to Quantum’s meeting place. Bond is able to track Madeline’s location and infiltrates the meeting. This scene plays out similar to how it did in the original film only with a round table as the individuals seated are supposed to be equals to one another. Madeline of course is seated at the table but another of the seats is conspicuously empty much to the chagrin of the other members. As in the original we get some references to the various crimes the organisation has perpetrated around the globe along with references to something called the SPECTRE initiative. Eventually the door to the meeting room opens and like in the original film the final seat is filled by a man whose face is obscured in shadows. One of the members subtlety reprimands the shadowy man’s tardiness but gets nothing but silence in return. The other members bicker about the SPECTRE initiative before holding a vote on whether or not to halt the Initiative. The vote goes against SPECTRE and man shadows begins to laugh, before saying something ominous, such as “I afraid this organisation will not tolerate insubordination”. The walls to the meeting room suddenly slide open to revel dozens of armed goons who immediately open fire on the rest of Quantum’s leadership. Bond leaps out of his hiding place to protect Madeline but is unable to prevent her from being captured. During the confusion there is a brief moment in which Bond and the man in shadows stare at each other. However, before Bond himself can be captured he throws his explosive watch at the man in the shadows blinding him and causing a distraction so he can escape.
Bond does successfully escape from the carnage and is able to hide from the pursuing goons. However just when he thinks he’s safe a passer-by sprays him with knockout gas and white van pulls up for Bond to bundled into. He awakes in a small room surrounded by Russians led by Russian Felix Leiter who explains that they’re Russian intelligence agents who’ve been tracking Quantum’s activities since the defection of their own agent (the Masked Woman in Mexico) several months prior and that they think Quantum is behind a string of recent terror attacks. Bond explains his side of the story and its revealed that the trackejewellery Madeline is wearing is still functional and is transmitting from a crater in the Sahara desert.
Bond and the Russian’s travel to the Sahara and Russian Felix Leiter explains that Bond has six hours to free Madeline before the Russians go in and kill everything that moves. Bond successfully infiltrates the facility in the crater but when he enters the room where he believes Madeline is being held it is revealed to be a trap and Bond is promptly disarmed. He is then met by the man in the shadows, now scarred from the explosion in Rome, who reveals himself as Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Blofeld tells Bond about how he has been causing terror attacks across Europe to convince the nations of Europe to join the European Security Service which is of course feeding intelligence directly to Blofeld and that the UK, the only holdout, will be the next target. When Bond asks why Blofeld is revealing this to him Blofeld will turn on multiple screens of camera’s watching the entrance to MI6, proclaiming that MI6 will be the site of the London terror attack, forcing the British government to join the European Security Service, and how he has had double agents working to ensure that during new construction work the entire headquarters was deliberately rigged to explode. He will state that he wants Bond to watch the destruction of MI6 in revenge for Bond scarring him in Rome.
Bond escapes and is able to free Madeline. Together they recover the plans for the MI6 bomb and make their way to the facility’s communications tower, setting off an alarm in process. Madeline is forced to defend the two of them as Blofeld’s goon converge on the tower while Bond contacts Q and Moneypenny to tell them about the bomb and how to disarm it. Since Bond and Madeline are occupying the communications tower they can prevent Blofeld from setting off the bomb remotely however they can’t be sure that any of Blofeld’s double agents in MI6 won’t set off the bomb early so Q and Moneypenny have to keep a low profile. Q and Moneypenny are able to disarm the bomb in nick of time just as Russian special operations soldiers begin to enter the crater.
A big, Lewis Gilbert-style shootout occurs between Blofeld’s men and the Russians with Bond and Madeline trapped between them. Inevitably the facility will start to explode and Blofeld will attempt to escape. The final action sequence will see Bond chase down Blofeld in order to prevent him from escaping. Bond can either succeed or fail depending on where we want Blofeld for the next film.
We then get our debriefing scene with M and end the film with Bond and Madeline driving away in the DB5.

Spectre was a fantastic Bond film when you think about it.

-Bond Girl who was likable and could handle herself some of the time. Wasn't totally helpless when she could easily fight back, she would fight back.
-Christoph Waltz portrayed Blofeld very much like Blofeld has been in the last Bond films. Very calm and monotonous with sprinkles of eccentric here and there. Just wish he had a better ending in the film, felt odd having Blofeld being arrested. A big classic villain like that should be killed gloriously or get away for a new adventure in the next film.
-Action scenes and cinematography was gorgeous, as was the locations they took Bond to.
-Loved the headquarters for Blofeld, had some very classic Bond throwback visuals with it
-Seeing MI6 building collapse was so sad and emotional. Perfect for a climax.
-When watching, I tend to just ignore the step Brothers story detail and it doesn't ruin the film for me.
-Theme Song was also good. I'm not a huge fan of Sam Smith's vocals, but the instrumental was perfect.
All in all, in the span of Craig's Films, Spectre doesn't shine in the likes of Casino Royale and Skyfall, but it still remains amazing. Considering you have Bond films like DAF, QoS, AVTAK, DAD that were greatly planned for being underwhelming in their respective lineups. Spectre definitely did much better job.

Comprehensive Comic Book Catch-Up Guide

(Main Series) Friendship is Magic #1-4 The Return of Queen Chrysalis (Major Storyline)
Main Characters - Mane 6, CMC, Chrysalis
Summary - Queen Chrysalis has returned, replaced all the citizens of Ponyville with changelings, and kidnapped the CMC. Will the our heroes be able to stop her before it is too late? Or will rising tensions between the friends spell out their doom?
Quick Review - A worthy introduction to the comics with some fun character moments. Any comic drawn by Andy Price is worth checking out for the art alone. Chrysalis literally throws a kitten at a wall and it explodes into blood. 6/10

FiM #5-8 Nightmare Rarity (Major) (Highly Recommended)
Characters - Rarity, Mane 6, Luna, Spike
Summary - Rarity is overcome by insecurity and the fear that she doesn't provide enough to the group, and allows herself to be corrupted by Nightmare. As her friends rush to save her, Luna must overcome her own guilty past in order to defeat it again in the present.
Quick Review - Nightmare Rarity's design is superb. So are the moon denizens. Katie Cook's writing style can lean into the absurd sometimes, but she knows how to do an emotional moment. We see how Luna earned her flowing mane. Spike saves the day. Trixie gets a few lines. 8/10

FiM #9-10 Zen and the Art of Gazebo Repair (Highly Recommended)
Characters - Big Mac
Summary - Big Mac has to find nails to fix his gazebo during the Summer Wrap-Up festival. But the world has other plans for him.
Quick Review - Big Mac plays a wonderful comedic straight man. Seriously, the comic is hilarious, the art is amazing, and Big Mac is a chad. Dude has to fight off like four different mares fawning over him, including Luna. He just wants to repair his gazebo, for god's sake. 9/10

FiM #11-12 (Neigh Anything)
Characters - Cadance, Shining Armor, Biff Tannen
Summary - Discover the romantic tale of how Cadance and Shining Armor came to be. Can Shining Armor prove himself worthy to Cadance? Will she choose him over High School Gigachad Buck Withers? Probably.
Quick Review - I enjoy it. Not much to say. Shining Armor belts out some Oingo Boingo for Cadance, and lord knows there is nothing more romantic than singing about how much you love little girls. (6.5/10)

Annual 2013: Equestria Girls (The Fall of Sunset Shimmer)
Characters - Sunset Shimmer, Celestia
Summary - Sunset Shimmer is a magical prodigy. But Celestia will not further her teachings, because despite her prowess, the young sorcerer has much to learn. Sunset believes otherwise.
Quick Review - To everyone clamoring for a proper Sunset backstory and motivation I am proud to announce that this is not it. It's unbelievably vague and generic. It pains me as a massive Shimmerfriend. Also, all the human designs look like ayy lmaos. More so than the show. Hopefully they pick it up in the next EqG comic... (3/10)

FiM #13-14 (My Little Pirate)
Characters - Fluttershy, Mane 6, Hoofbeard
Summary - Fluttershy has become too attached to a fish she rescued, and regrets letting it go. So when a dangerous pirate arrives looking for a crew, she take it is an opportunity to reunite with her fish. Also a pirate adventure thing, Hoofbeard seeks a treasure behind a perilous journey.
Quick Review - Utterly forgettable. I really cannot be bothered to reread it for a review. It was okay I think? (5/10)

FiM #15-16 (The Book Worm)
Characters - Twilight, Mane 6
Summary - A magical bookworm begins devouring his way through Twilight's library. That wouldn't be such an issue (except to Twilight), if the characters from to books didn't begin popping up in the real world. Now Twilight and co must take down the bookworm in it's own domain: The Realm of Books.
Quick Review - I like Pinkie's fantasy world. Another just okay one. Lotta references to other media. Marvel, LoTR, Disney shlock, you get the idea. The void had some solid character moments for Twilight and Rainbow. (6/10)

Friends Forever #1: Pinkie & Applejack
Characters - Take a guess
Summary - In the issue, Applejack and Pinkie Pie enter a baking contest, and culinary hijinks ensue.
Quick Review - Rough start for FF. Predictable and silly. Art here is really not good. However, it does have Guy Fieri pony. (3/10)

Friends Forever #2: CMC & Discord (Highly Recommended)
Characters - CMC, Discord
Summary - Discord takes the crusaders to increasingly dangerous dimensions in their search for a cutie mark.
Quick Review - This one is super sweet. Some of the best Discord showing in the series. The CMC being some of the only ponies to understand and show gratitude towards Discord for his effort is so damn heartwarming. (8/10)

Friends Forever #3: Celestia & Spike (Highly Recommended)
Characters - Celestia, Spike
Summary - Spike wants to get Twilight something nice for her birthday, but the gift he settled on turns out to be slightly hard to come by. He enlists Celestia's help in getting the gift for her student, a gift found deep in the dangerous Crystal Mountains.
Quick Review - By far my favorite portrayal of Celestia. Lot of nice and touching dialogue between her and Spike, and some insight on Celestia's mindset as a ruler and teacher. Shame they went further down the "Celestia is an incompetent and petty klutz" route later on. (8/10)

FiM #17-20 (Reflections) (Major) (Recommended)
Characters - Mane 6, Celestia, Starswirl, Sombra
Summary - Celestia has been secretly visiting another dimension for quite some time. A world where good is evil, and evil is good, and she has fallen madly in love with the benevolent King Sombra. A world where she and Luna are villains threatening to take over both dimensions. And it's all her fault.
Quick Review - This one is super polarizing. For me, it's a collection of great ideas utilized poorly. The mirror dimension is a very interesting concept that I wish would be re explored. And i'm content with all the characters. But the climax, touching as it maybe, kinda dampens this one for me. Still, (7/10)

Friends Forever #4: Twilight & Shining Armor
Characters - ^^^^^
Summary - Twilight Sparkle is worried her and Shiny have drifted apart since their foalhoods. An opportunity presents itself to rekindle when her and Shining Armor team up to catch a ghost that haunts the Crystal Empire palace.
Quick Review? - Turns out, there are a lot of FF comics, and a lot of them are pretty inconsequential. There are only so many times I can say, "It was cute. I liked it." before that gets redundant. So unless I have something more to say, i'm gonna reduce these to just Rating and Summary. Pretty good tho. (6/10)

Friends Forever #5: Fluttershy & Zecora
Summary - Fluttershy and Zecora try to figure out why Fluttershy can suddenly hear her animal friends talk. Spoilers: It was Discord. Go figure.

Friends Forever #6: Rainbow Dash & Trixie
Summary - Rainbow Dash is called upon by a newly crowned Queen Trixie to perform for a kingdom of Diamond Dogs. Turns out being Queen isn't all its cracked up to be.

Summary - Doesn't need one. Trixie and Babs are in it. Go read it.
Quick Review - The relationship between Babs and Trixie here and they parallels they draw from each other are pretty great. I always love those kinds of strange character interactions. (7/10)

FiM Issue 23 (Pets to the Rescue)

Summary - When there owners are nowhere to be found, the pets team up and must set out to find their owners and assist them in whatever magical conundrum they may have found themselves in.
Quick Review - I think the villain here would have been really interesting in almost any other scenario. Other than that, minimal dialogue, and the art isn't exceptional, so (5/10)

Friends Forever #9: Granny & The Flimflam Bros
Summary - Granny Smith helps Flim and Flam patch things up after they have a falling-out over a mare.
Rating - This one is pretty wholesome. (7/10)

FiM Issue 24 (Discord in Time)

Summary - Discord take the CMC and Flutterbutter on an a journey through time to show them some animals. Hijinks ensue.
Quick Review - Another really nice Discord issue. He isn't use to having all these friends and watching out for them in his chaos, so he drags them along in his dangerous adventures. He then immediately forgets this lesson. (7/10)

Summary - Fluttershy helps Iron Will with has marital problems.

Quick Review - Don't read this one. Seriously, it's bad. Nothing really makes sense. Applejack has some sort of brain defect. Twilight arbitrarily cannot use her magic on Equestrian citizens. Even when they are dangerous criminals, apparently? (1/10)

Friends Forever #12: Pinkie & Twilight
Summary - Twilight tries to help Pinkie overcome her harrowing cocaine addiction. When that fails, Twilight starts doing coke herself to make the guilt go away. Pinkie stops doing coke for like five minutes, and Twi considers that a success.

Equestria Girls Annual 2014: Holiday Special
Characters - Humane 6, Sunset Shimmer, CMC
Summary - The holidays are nearing, and Sunnybun is feeling pretty down in the dumps. The girls try to cheer her up by inviting over for a few nights of debauchery. This cheers her up a bit. So, the Humane 5 go home on the shortbus and Sunny walks home, finally content with herself. Meanwhile the CMC decide that Sunset is keeping them from spending time with their sisters(?) and start a social media account in her name, called Anon-A-Miss, which they use to spread explicit photos of their sisters from the "sleepovers" and frame Sunset. Everyone in the school begin to tragically suffer from severe mental deficiencies and buy it immediately. Because the chick who just saved all of your sorry asses from soul sucking harlots like a week ago is going to post shit about her friends with her fucking face attached to the account.
Quick Review - I really wish I could shit on this more, but I got quite a bit to get through. (-3/10)

Summary - In the issue, Rarity must entertain Babs Seed when Sweetie Belle falls ill. Turns out Babs idea of entertainment is different than Rarity's.

FiM #27-28 (The Root of the Problem) (Major)
Characters - Mane 6, Bramble, King Aspen
Summary - The Everfree spontaneously begins protruding into Ponyville. At the root of this problem, the druid-esque Deers who wish to reclaim the parts of their forest that were lost.
Quick Review - The Deer are really neat, and having them be the night elves of Equestria is a fun concept. But the deer people kind of get the shaft, and most of the story focuses on the avaricious minotuar Well-to-do. (6.5/10)

Friends Forever #14: Luna & Spike
Summary - In the issue, Princess Luna enlists Spike's help in solving a dragon problem in Fillydelphia.
Rating - Luna and Spike spend three pages together, and the rest of the story is focused on an annoying pink fangirl dragon. (4/10)

Quick Review - As with most Jay Fosgitt's stuff, cute, but a lot of fluff and not much to carry an interesting story. (6/10)

FIENDship is Magic #1: King Sombra (Major) (Highly Recommended)
Characters - Sombra, Radiant Hope
Summary - Twilight Sparkle and Princess Cadance discover King Sombra's diary and learn of his rise to power. But before that, how he was a sickly outcast, a troubled young amnesiac whose only friend was the equally strange Radiant Hope, who still had imaginary friends.
Quick Review - Much needed backstory for Sombra, and very well done at that. His connection to Radiant Dawn feels genuine, and his corruption by way of shitty crystal ball is absolutely tragic. My dude just wanted to go the Crystal Faire ): Also Princess Amore fucking dies. (9/10)

FIENDship is Magic #2: Tirek (Recommended)
Characters - Tirek, Scorpan, Sendak
Summary - Tirek, young and ambitious, sneaks out of his royal families castle to visit the unhinged sorcerer Sendak to learn more about magic. Scorpan is worried about his brothers ambitions.
Quick Review - Doesn't add much character depth to Tirek, but it's suitable. Presents a lot of cool ideas not explored as thoroughly as they could be. Leaves a lot up to interpretation and head canon. (7/10)

FIENDship is Magic #3: Sirens (Non-Canon)
Characters - The Dazzlings, Starswirl
Summary - The fate of the world is determined by a music battle, and if the Dazzlings win, all is lost. This is not Rainbow Rocks.
Quick Review - Not a single character acts in character, and while the other Fiendship issues are take themselves pretty seriously, this one is drastically different tonally and opts for comedy. Which really sucks, because I wanted actual backstories for the Sirens. Humor falls flat as well. (2/10)

FIENDship is Magic #4: Nightmare Moon
Characters - Nightmare Moon, Nyx (Not that Nyx)
Summary - A recently banished Nightmare Moon attempts exacts revenge on Princess Celestia through the world of dreams. The Nyx, the keepers of the dreams, will not allow it.
Quick Review - I much prefer Nightmare Moon as a manifestation of Luna's negative emotions over depictions a corrupting parasitic entity. Story is serviceable, a bit sad, nothing noteworthy. (6/10)

FIENDship is Magic #5: Queen Chrysalis (Major)
Characters - Twilight, Chrysalis
Summary - The Mane Six visit the imprisoned Queen Chrysalis, who recounts her past exploits.
Quick Review - Case of unreliable narrator here. Chrysalis implies that changelings are made of pure dark magic, which is an idea I actually quite like, but having them reform like they did would say otherwise. Story is sorta all over, like a Chrysalis anthology short. (6/10)

Friends Forever #16: Diamond Tiara & Silver Spoon
Summary - Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon compete against the Cutie Mark Crusaders in a scavenger hunt.
Rating - Smokin' hot goth pony makes an appearance. (7/10)

FiM #30-31 (Ponyville Days)

Summary - Civil War over a land dispute or something, can't really be bothered with this one.
Quick Review - As far as I remember, this is one of the issues that gives everyone in Ponyville a crippling case of "has to wear a helmet while outside". Dumbing down characters to make a story work is obnoxious. (3/10)

Summary - A mysterious new villain brings several of the series' past antagonists together to attack the Crystal Empire.
Quick Review - I want to keep my gushing about this one brief. The umbrum design and lore are some of the best things to come out of the comics. This Sombra is infinitely better than the one in the show. I definitely didn't cry at the end because i'm a big boy. (9/10)

Summary - An astronomical event causes Discord to transform from a creature of chaos to a being of pure order. But not all is at seems with the newly minted Accord.
Quick Review - Starlight gets one arc throughout all of these comics. luckily it's pretty good. She gets some good character growth. Accord is pretty god damn terrifying. Actual sound logic is used to best the villain, which is pretty rare. (8/10)

Summary - Pinkie Pie and Cheese are eaten by a possessed party house. Seriously.

Summary - Rainbow Dash follows Soarin to a remote location to help him with a dangerous mission.

Summary - Have you ever wondered what would have happened if Prince Blueblood was sent to Ponyville instead of Twiliight? No? Too bad, dude.
Summary - I would have loved to have gotten more deviations. Read about Blueblood being an arrogant prick for half an hour. It's fine. (6/10)

Friends Forever #38 Princess Celestia and Princess Luna (Recommended)
Summary - Princess Celestia and Princess Luna's minor squabbling escalates just before they plan to participate in the Sisterhooves Social.
Quick Review - Friends Forever Finale. Andy Price outdoes himself yet again. Hilarious and Heartwarming. (8/10)

Summary - No seriously, didn't read it. Fosgitt, Fluttershy, fluff, the three F's of i'm going to be fucking bored. Maybe it's a masterpiece. I'll never know.

FiM Issue #55-56 (Wings Over Yakyakistan)
Characters - Rainbow, Rutherford, Ember, Spike, Pinkie
Summary - When the dragons invade Yakyakistan over an ancient treaty, it's up to heroes to defend the Yaks and try and diffuse the situation. Spike doesn't like the idea of fighting his own kind.
Quick Review - Let it be known that I would have been totally cool with the Yaks getting destroyed. Typical let go of the past, look to the future stuff. Rainbow's parents are here, and they are fun, and Spitfire gets a bit of extra love, so (7/10)

FiM Issue #57 (Apinkalypse Now)
Characters - Pinkie, Mane 6, Discord
Summary - Pinkie Pie accidentally becomes trapped in Discord's realm. If you wanted to see more of Chaos Pinkie, then here you go.
Quick Review - I really like the how the chaos dimension is shown in the comic, in that adapts to the current owner if they themselves can't be turned. You'll notice by this point the writers will do whatever in their power to make sure Starlight can be written out somehow. (7/10)

FiM Issue #58 (The Vines That Bind)
Characters - Twi, Flutts, Zecora, Cattail, Aqua Vine
Summary - Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, and Zecora follow the notes of Mage Meadowbrook search for a flower said to cure any ailment. The search soon becomes an obsession for Twilight, determined to get her name in the history books.
Quick Review - Dude, Twilight, you already saved the world at least seven times. That Magenta Bloom shit would just be a footnote. Overall pretty forgettable. (5/10)

Quick Review - Gilded Lily's design is absolutely adorable. She also looks like she tastes pretty good, like Oranges n' Creme. Solid one-off. (7/10)

FiM Issue #61-62 (Convocation of the Creatures!) (Major)

Summary - Twilight Sparkle makes a discovery during the largest assembly of creatures in history that threatens to redraw the map of Equestria.
Quick Review - Glenda canonically has a stutter, making her best changeling. Good bit of overbuilding in this one, without falling into the common trap of making the convocation feel too modern. (7/10)

FiM Issue #63 (All in Marederation)
Characters - Twilight, Pinkie, Temperance
Summary - Ponyville gets swept by an anti-sugar movement that threatens to put Sugarcube Corner out of business.
Quick Review - MLP's thinly veiled take on the Temperance Movement. Another one where all of Ponyville is turned into exceptional individuals. (4/10)

FiM Issue #64 (Everything Old) (Recommended)
Characters - Rarity, Fluttershy, Coco Pommel
Summary - Fluttershy and Rarity travel to Manehattan, where Rarity discovers that old, ugly fashions are back in style.
Quick Review - I absolutely adore the message here. Things you made when you were younger that you maybe embarrassed of now don't have to be cast aside and forgotten. Rather, look to them to see how you have improved and how you can still improve. Coco is a QT. (8/10)

My Little Pony: Legends of Magic Annual 2018 (Major) (Recommended)
Characters - The Pillars, Pony of Shadows
Summary - The Pillars of Old Equestria face a new danger that tests their skills as a team. One that they may find feels a bit like a deja vu.
Quick Review - I really like the relationship between Stygian and Rockhoof here. I wonder if Starswirl was always meant to be a dickhead? Green Pony of Shadows looks badass as fuck. Also, Somnambula is cute as hell. (7/10)
Edit - Consider there are twelve of these. I am not awake enough to add them all. Read' em. They're pretty good lore stuffs.

FiM Issue #65 (Queen for One Less Day) (Recommended)
Characters - Celestia, Scarlet Petal
Summary - Princess Celestia disguises herself to live among ordinary ponies for a day. But when her magical necklace is stolen by a thief, she may lose the ability to turn back into herself for good.
Quick Review - I love this comic. Shows off the best parts of Celestia's character. I'm running out of synonyms for heartwarming, so just go read this one. (8/10)

FiM Issue #66 (Applewood Follies)
Characters - Mane 6
Summary - Twilight Sparkle and her friends discover that a film is being made about them. But when the director hands them the reins, they discover it's harder to make a movie than they thought.
Quick Review - I'm really not a fan of more modern tech in Equestria. I don't mind it at all if it's used as a background gag, but here, where it's the plot of the comic, I just find it obtrusive.

Ponyville Mysteries Issue 1
Characters - CMC, Nurse Redheart
Summary - "Welcome to a new series of mystery and intrigue! The Cutie Mark Crusaders discover their inner detectives and solve crimes nopony else can! Will they be able to discover who is stealing supplies from Ponyville hospital and get their schoolwork done at the same time?"
Quick Review - None of these are particularly engaging, so I won't review the rest. When I figure these mysteries out all by myself like the grown man I am I feel particularly proud, like I just solved a crossword puzzle they have on those Kiddie menus at iHop.

Ponyville Mysteries Issue 2

Summary - "There's a major mystery at the... bowling alley? Ponyville's team is set to break a bowling record, but the alley keeps being ransacked by a mystery criminal! Will the Cutie Mark Crusaders be able to set the pins right and solve the caper?"

Summary - Tempest Shadow travels across Equestria to learn more about friendship and comes face-to-face with her past.

Quick Review - I hate this issue. Not because it's bad, but because we are teased with infinitely more interesting stories. I want to see the princesses on Nightmare Night, like the cover! I want to see Shim and Glim's NN, like on the first page! Fucking cocktease. (4/10)

FiM Issue #72 (Pie in the Sky, Again)
Characters - Pinkie, AJ, Pear Butter
Summary - Applejack discovers an old Apple family pie recipe and seeks to recreate it for Granny Smith. Along the way, they meet ponies who her mom has touched in her life. I wouldn't mind being touched by Pear Butter.
Quick Review - Standard. Wholesome. Sweet. (7/10)

My Little Pony: Nightmare Knights (Major) (Highly Recommended)
Characters - Luna, Stygian, Trixie, Capper, Tempest, Daybreaker, Eris
Summary - Princess Luna assembles a team of former villains to face a new threat to Equestria.
Quick Review - I cannot recommend this arc enough. Every single character gets a chance to shine. Stygian gets much need development. Eris and Daybreaker make a menacing evil duo. The villain casino makes a great setting. Sunset Shimmer gets a cameo. (Even though her and Starlight are once again shafted.) Capper absolutely steals the show. Tempest is a bit more brutish than she usually is, but as we don't know much about her anyway, that's a very minor gripe. (9/10)

FiM Issue #73 (Copycats)
Characters - Fluttershy, Twilight
Summary - A magical amulet causes Fluttershy to become more animalistic.
Quick Review - I have no idea what the fuck what went on in this issue or why. It's a mess. (3/10)

FiM Issue #74 (On the Mane Stage) (Recommended)
Characters - Zephyr, Fluttershy, Silverstream, Pixie Cut
Summary - Fluttershy's brother Zephyr Breeze attends the All-Equestria Mane Styling Conference.
Quick Review - Even Zephyr Breeze can snag a qtπ hairstylist gf. There is hope for us yet, bros. Could you tell i'm down a third of a bottle of Grey Goose by this point? (7/10)

FiM Issue #75-78 (Major) (Recommended)
Characters - Cosmos, Twilight, Discord, Fluttershy
Summary - The Mane Six's quest for the fallen stars of a missing constellation puts them on a collision course with their most galactic adversary yet. Discord's clingy ex wife who still hasn't received any child support.
Quick Review - They don't even bother to write Starlight out anymore. She just doesn't exist. Cosmos isn't as fun of a villain as Eris or the Storm King, but she's serviceable. I do like her design. Discord puts his past behind him for good physically and metaphorically. (7/10)

FiM Issue #79 (The Ponyville Anniversary Spectacular) (Highly Recommended) (Major!)
Characters - Sunset Shimmer, I don't know I don't remember the rest
Summary - Fuck you it has Shim Sham.
Quick Review - Sunnybutt jams out on a guitar at the end. (11/10)

FiM Issue #80 (Live-Action Role Pony!)

Summary - The Mane Six play a live-action role-playing game. The usual Pinkie hijinks ensue.
Quick Review - I'm so use to using LARP as an insult now, it's weird to see it in an endearing manner. Fun little adventure issue. (6/10)

FiM Issue #81 (Pretty Fly)
Characters - Scootaloo, Rumble, Rainbow, Wind Sock
Summary - Scootaloo and Rumble learn about the only Earth pony to become a member of the Wonderbolts.
Quick Review - Heartwarming. Seriously, someone get me thesaurus. (6.5/10)

FiM Issue #82 (Dog-Dog-Dogged Determination)
Characters - Rarity, Mane 6, Celestia, Cerberus
Summary - Rarity is tasked with giving Cerberus obedience training after he leaves his post at Tartarus again.
Quick Review - Dude, Rares, never change. (6/10)

FiM Issue #83 (The Strange Case of Silver Blaze)

Summary - Twilight Sparkle and Spike investigate when a famous racing tortoise goes missing.
Quick Review - Less Sherlock Holmes and more Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. This is a good thing. (6/10)

My Little Pony: Feats of Friendship (Major) (Recommended)
Characters - Student Six, Swift Foot
Summary - Come one, come all, to the School of Friendship's very first sporting event-the Feats of Friendship! As Sandbar, Smolder, Gallus, Ocellus, Yona, and Silverstream prepare for the new competition, they realize they're going to need one more pony to round out their team. Enter Swift Foot, a mysterious new exchange student! But will she help strengthen the Young Six's bonds of friendship-or just drive them apart? Jealousy threatens our favorite youngsters in this brand-new miniseries!
Quick Review - This is by far and away my favorite Student 6 depiction in the franchise. It shows off very well how far they have come and how well they work together as friends and individuals. Swift Hoof makes for a great antagonist, trying to plant seeds of resentment but realizing that it doesn't work on the students and realizing her own faults. Dom Athenian Warrior waifu also included. (8.5/10)

FiM Issue #84 (Identity Crisis)
Characters - Ocellus
Summary - Ocellus struggles to complete a big project for the School of Friendship midterm.
Quick Review - Man, I wish my problem was that I was so booksmart I had trouble fitting it all into my creative outlets. What a fucking struggle that would be. But I understand wanting to be a perfectionist, and that sucks. Amazing insight as usual by me. (5/10)

FiM Issue #85 (Apple Bobbing)
Characters - AJ, AB, Big Mac
Summary - Applejack teaches Apple Bloom the meaning of courage by telling her the story of how she conquered her fear of the water when she was little.
Quick Review - A whole lot of touching moments between AJ and AB. A very cozy little story if you ignore the giant spider. (7/10)

FiM Issue #86 (Marble and a Hard Place)
Characters - Maud, Marble Pinkie
Summary - Pinkie Pie and Maud Pie help their sister Marble make friends by helping her throw a party.
Quick Review - I love the Pie family, dude. The chemistry between them is something we don't get to see often enough. (6.5/10)
